Commenting Rules

By commenting on this site you agree to the follow the following rules:

  • Referral links:
    • Do not leave referral links, codes or text unless the post specifically states this is allowed.
    • Do not request a referral link, to be e-mailed a code or anything else unless the post specifically states this is allowed
    • Read the rules for leaving your referral links, codes or text when it is specifically allowed. This might vary from post to post so please read it each time.
    • Please do not direct people to click your (or anybody else’s) name where you referral links are.
    • No offering incentives or splitting the referral bonus. This is a nice idea but often people don’t hold up their side of the deal and it’s impossible to police.
    • Use links from readers that make positive contributions. A lot of regular readers have clickable names that have a list of all their referrals.
    • You must use an e-mail address when leaving a referral (in the e-mail field). This is because most of the comments without an e-mail in that field are from people that have never commented on the site before. The idea behind allowing referrals is to reward users that contribute to the site.
  • Be respectful: Avoid insults, personal attacks, and offensive language. Homophobia, racism, sexism, antisemitic comments are all strictly banned.
  • Stay on topic: Comments should be relevant to the content being discussed
  • No impersonation: Don’t pretend to be someone else.
  • Avoid spam: Do not post irrelevant advertisements or promotional material. This includes making lots of comments that do not provide any value to the blog and other readers. Remember many readers are subscribed to all new comments on specific pages and will receive an e-mail whenever you leave a comment.
  • Search for answers before commenting. If you have a question, especially about a popular topic/post chances are it has already been asked. You can search the comments by using the comment search bar, more information here.
  • Add a picture to your e-mail. It’s easier to recognize regular contributors if you use an image associated with your e-mail address, more information here.
  • Please do not double post. If you don’t leave your e-mail when commenting, or if your comment contains links or certain words it might need manual approval. Please be patient and wait for the comment to be approved instead of posting it again.
  • Please do not use AI. Please do not use AI to write your comments or summarize the content.
  • You can tag other users.
    • Find a comment from the person from anywhere on the site. Make a note of the comment id (this is a number that looks like “2007558”)
    • Type (copying and pasting does not work) the following: “@ guest _ comment#” (without the quotes and spaces).
  • Agree to disagree. There is no end to continue going back and forth with a person when you clearly disagree. Chances are neither of you will change your mind so just drop it and be the bigger person by not having the last word.

If I’ve missed anything, please share it in the comments below. We do greatly appreciate everybody that makes this community so positive and provides useful datapoints and deals. We would like to keep it that way.

Why Do We Have Referral Rules?

Some readers have asked why we have referral rules at all. Here are some of the reasons:

  • Blog becomes overrun with referral links/codes and e-mails. This makes it difficult to discuss the actual deals as readers need to wade through referrals to find information. This is why we try to create dedicated referral threads (sometimes for small region specific bank bonuses we allow them to be shared on the deal page as not many people are eligible) so discussion can occur without referral links.
  • We don’t allow asking for referrals for two reasons:
    • This still clogs up threads with referral requests
    • Some users will pretend to ask for a referral, only to make it clear they can now refer or use two names to be both sides of the transaction and just advertise their link

Unfortunately if we don’t have any rules regarding referrals people share in places where it would stifle discussion of the actual deal itself.
