[Expired] Wawa: Free Shorti (8/31 Only)

Deal has ended, view more free food deals by clicking here.

The Offer

  • Wawa is offering a free shorti on 8/31.

Our Verdict

Basically a hoagie. Need to be a Wawa rewards member to do this deal and it should appear on the app a day or two before the deal goes live.

Hoagiefest is finally back after a 3 year hiatus, though the 10” subs are now $6 instead of $5, and shorti subs are $5 (app ordering only for now).

I’m frankly surprised that personnel shortages and supply chain disruptions have made this possible, though this could just be another desperate push to increase app usage. The Wawa app is the shittiest thing ever made, so app-only ordering will be a hard pass for me.

Got a rando bonus reward for “Free Any Size Wawa Refresher” last week. Used it today on a 24 oz. Mango Dragonfruit Refresher ($4.69).

Looks like stores are also posting notices about the class-action settlement for 2019 purchases.

Can’t use the app, error ME0001. Removed and reinstalled the app. Took 10 minutes to download. My network is fine. Same error. Wawa.com is slow or unresponsive in browser.

I received the email for it a few minutes ago. It’s a normal Reward coupon. It should be valid any time between now and Wednesday.

 William Charles,

Where did you hear about this deal? Is there a link advertising it?

Regular-sized Wawa hoagies have shrunk in the past two years, so shorties will be even smaller. Not worth going out of your way for this unless you’re doing the impoverished student starvation diet thing.

What size are they now? When I checked a while ago, it was 6 inches for Shorti and 10 inches for Classic.

Pro tip: get one of the key ring tags and link to your account. Much quicker than scanning and juggling a phone, your stuff and a credit/debit card, plus if your phone is dead or has no signal you’ll still get your points.

It’s easier just to use a WaWa gc and link it to your Rewards account.

Wawa rewards is a pretty good system. It used to be that you had to pre-load your account with hard cash and had to pay with that wawa-cash to get rewards, now it is a barcode in the app which you scan before your pay and you then pay as normal (credit card, cash, debit, etc.). Once you have $50 in tracked spending at Wawa you get a reward (which unfortunately expires after a couple weeks). The reward is usually a choice between a free shorti hoagie, free large beverage or a free yogurt parfait or free salad in the form of a barcode you show at checkout. Works out to be like a free ~8% cash back if you are a frequent Wawa patron. Gas is not part of the $50.

Another trick I have used for years is purchasing Wawa GCs at stations that sell gas. All purchases there code as gas. Then you can use the wawa GCs within the app at non-gas stores and still effectively earn your higher gas back percentage(my highest is Costco Citi VISA at 4%, or 5% for Chase Freedom one quarter a year) for all Wawa spend. I buy $100 GCs at a time and they last me at least a couple months.

Sheetz codes all purchases as gas too, but I don’t believe there are any Sheetz that don’t sell gas so you don’t need to preload GCs into the app.

Agree the rewards are pretty solid and usually at least $2 in value, sometimes closer to $6 when you get a free shorti. Plus random stuff like free coffee and free soft drinks maybe once every other month. Between these rewards and my 4% cash back I get about 12% back on all Wawa spend.

FYI, a shortie is half of a full sized hoagie. Basically a snack.

It is around the same size as a 6 inch Subway sandwich and I’m sure some people eat that as a meal.
