Which Barclays US Airways Card Is Best?

If you follow any blogs in the card credit/miles & points space you’ll probably have seen a bunch of posts about the “new” Barclay US Airways offer for 40,000 points after your first purchase. This deal has actually been around since early January of this year (read our post here) – the reason you’re hearing about it now is because Barclay is now paying affiliate commissions on this offer.

We always post the best credit card deals regardless of our financial compensation, unfortunately other bloggers don’t do the same which is why we suggest you read our master list of credit card bonuses for the latest best offer on each individual card.

Another thing these bloggers aren’t telling you is there is actually two different offers available for this card. All of the offers come with the following:

  • 0% Introductory APR for 15 months for balance transfers, then a variable APR of 15.99%, 19.99% or 24.99% depending on your credit worthiness
  • Your first checked bag free
  • One companion certificate for up to two guests on US Airways operated flights at $99 each + taxes and fees
  • Priority boarding on Zone 2 US Airways operated flights

We’ve listed two offers below and will also let you know which one we like the most.

  •  30,000 US Airways miles after first use, another 10,000 US Airways miles on card anniversary date. Annual fee of $89 waived for first year, the anniversary miles post before the annual fee hits meaning it’s possible to get the extra 10,000 points without paying an annual fee. Direct link [Note: this will take you directly to the application page for this offer. There is no landing page stating the terms. Lots of people have reported getting this deal, but as always your milage may vary]
  • 40,000 US Airways miles after first use. Annual fee of $89 not waived. Direct link to offer [Note: this is an affiliate link, we receive commission if you sign up using this link]

There also used to be a third offer which was available to US Airways Preferred members, but that deal recently died.

Our Verdict

The only reason to get the second offer is if you value having 10,000 points up front at $89 or more. Personally I don’t see the value in doing this at all and think that anybody who is considering applying for this card should take the 30,000 upfront + 10,000 on anniversary offer, as that way you don’t need to pay an annual fee of $89. It’s pretty disappointing that other bloggers aren’t alerting their readers to this better offer.

We suggest signing up to our newsletter (you could win $25 a month) or RSS feed to be notified of the best credit card deals available. We will also be finishing our review on the US Airways card shortly, so keep an eye out for that.
