- Who the F*&@ is OneJet? by Cranky Flier. Interesting read and business model. There are lots of profitable business routes that don’t have direct routing currently and businesses are willing to pay a premium to ensure that their staff aren’t in the air longer than they need to be.

- Sites To Find Best Rate Guarantees by Travel is Free. I personally don’t find chasing BRG’s worth it for the time involved, I can usually find a cheaper rate but getting the chain to honour their guarantee is a different story at least in my very limited experience, I know others like Drew do very well out of it though so this is helpful for those wanting to learn or polish their skills.
- LUFTHANSA ‘Miles & More’ Members Can Now Redeem For Premium Economy Award Travel by Lufthansa Flyer. I think most people wanting the premium cabin experience will just redeem for premium cabins rather than this middle ground, but more choices/seats is always good.
William, as I wrote in that piece, Marriott is very easy to obtain a BRG — just use Hotelscombined.com and they often will find a less expensive rate for a Marriott property — it works most times for me and is well worth the effort, especially if you are Gold Elite with Marriott or higher and you get a comp breakfast at their Full Service properties.
As I noted in that piece, I don’t chase after IHG — although the payoff of a free night is nice — because most times you must book a non-refundable rate and that usually is a no go for me.
Hyatt will match a BRG — but unlike Marriott, if the competing rate has a more restrictive cancellation policy, they will adopt that more restrictive cancel policy (e.g. non-refundable rate) into your prior Hyatt reservation.
Marriott does not do this — if you originally booked a refundable rate on Marriott.com and found a less expensive but non-refundable rate elsewhere, and it is accepted by Marriott, you will get the 25% discount and retain the cancel policies of the original rate booked.
The above is why Marriott properties are my first go to place for a BRG in any given area.
Yeah, I usually don’t book paid stays with Marriott though so the 25% discount isn’t much good. Like I said, different things work for different people. Glad you’re able to get some value from it.
Well, the FM told me I was operating under the belief with regard to IHG’s “old” rules that essentially required a non-refundable rate but that it has been different for a long time.
So I plan to look into IHG more now that they don’t require the non-refundable rate comparisons and apparently seem to operate more like a normal BRG.
