Uber To Update Ratings System (Fairer Pool Ratings & Rider Score Prominently Displayed)

Uber has announced that they have made two updates to their rating system (rolling out globally today). The updates are as follows:

  • Fairer pool ratings. If a user rates their trip under 5 stars they will be prompted to select additional reasons why. If the reason is outside a drivers control (e.g route or co-rider behavior) the rating will not count towards the drivers average.
  • Encouraging better rider behavior. Uber drivers also rate their passengers and every user has their own rider score. It’s been possible to view your score for some time but Uber will now be clearly displaying this under a person’s name.

uber update

Both of these are common sense changes. UberPool ratings were obviously unfair for drivers previously (you shouldn’t be punished for things outside your control). I never understood why riders scores weren’t more prominently displayed. It would be nice to see some sort of incentive for maintaining a high rider score, but not sure exactly what would work.

Customers/riders should not be rated, especially publically. It’s a very bad customer service to all that. eBay learned that by removing that option (except for feel-good positive feedback). And neither Amazon or other retailers have it, especially in public way.

They could reported and even banned for abuse, but rating will really irk them, and they will turn to competing services that don’t judge them. Like I may have been rated poorly for not giving a tip to Uber driver, even though there’s no option to do that and my rating of 4.6 is not too bad, it’s still a hit to my ego that some driver “hates” me for some reason.

Anyway businesses/ drivers should be rated to improve customer service, customers don’t have to do anything other than pay. They ought to not stress out of being a “better customer” who deserve 5 stars, just to remain decent enough to not get banned by the businesses.
