Offer 2 description : France is not Italy… correct it.

By the way, I am french, and good luck to use your Amex in France, only 10% merchants accept Amex because Amex charges 4.3% commissuon to merchands towards 0.8% for Visa and Mastercards. Also the “no foreign fees” on Amex is BS because the $/€ rate is almost 3% difference. So yes don’t use Amex in Europe. My 2 cents…

im not french but live in paris and you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. It is well known pretty much globally amex merchant fees are higher than visa/mc. I use my US amex all the time while getting charged the exact $/€ rates between my amex and visas. I’ve even been to cafes that wouldn’t let me put an espresso on my visas but they’ll “take” amex.

P.S. People here, if you don’t understand these offers it’s obviously not for you. France spend $200 get $40, 10 times, ends 12/31, is an incredible incredible deal looking at the department stores participating. For most tourists it’s at least a 35% saving on anything over $200 once you consider the tax free shopping value added. I’m shocked by how generous this deal is, as you get to use it 10 times. I purchase a lot of stuff from these department stores and if you’re tax-free eligible I’m looking at saving $500+ with this deal.

I live in Italy and get the same exchange rate on my AMEX as I do on my Visa, which is approximately 0.5% difference from the spot rate. Its the same as any € transaction and its clear that you don’t know what you’re talking about on that point. While it is true very few merchants accept AMEX in Italy compared to Visa/MC, this offer tells you exactly where you can use your AMEX to get the deal.

“France is not Italy… correct it.” #1 – you are an anus, Aurel.
“only 10% merchants accept Amex” #2 – you haven’t been to France in a while, non?

This round of monthly offers by Amex is particularly lame.

Definitely an unusual offer. Do any of these stores sell local gift cards? 😀 I do spend money in europe, but it is almost exclusively on lodging, food, transport, car rental and gas. Do many Americans really go to Europe to shop? I guess the exchange rate isn’t bad now, but I have a hard time imagining this would be useful for anything other than ” retail therapy.”

100% true.
Most shops in Europe are more expansive than in USA, even for European brands like Hugo Boss, Armani, Roberto Cavalli, etc…
Even for wuropeans cars, bmw audi Benz are 25% less expansive than in Europe.
Except Louis Vuitton that is cheaper in France than anywhere in the world.
Disclosure I am french (not proud)

It is strange, but a bit of variety in these normally humdrum offerings by no-name outfits can’t hurt.
