Our Verdict

I recently asked readers if they’d like me to cover Amtrak more often and the general consensus was yes, so here you go. I have no idea how common this type of discount is, or even what any gotchas are so I’m going to be relying on knowledgeable readers to educate me in the comments below.

Anybody else targeted for buying Amtrak points at 50% off? How unusual is that sale?

When they have sales like these, do they apply to points purchases as well, or just cash rates?

I would also like to know if it’s 30% off points based purchases or only cash.

FYI, I just called Amtrak and a rep told me this 30% off does NOT apply when paying with points

Thanks for the post, first I am aware of it and am subscribed to Amtrak emails. This is likely the greatest discount that will be available for winter/spring travel. Nonrefundable but changes allowed with additional fare payment and sale is only for reserved seat trains not including the NEC. So no Keystones/Hiawatha/Surfliner etc.

It’s not all routes. per T&C Valid for travel on the Auto Train, California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder, Lake Shore Limited, Palmetto, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, Texas Eagle, Adirondack, Ethan Allen Express, Vermonter, Amtrak Downeaster, Empire Service, Maple Leaf, Pennsylvanian, Carolinian, Piedmont, Wolverine, Blue Water, Pere Marquette, Lincoln Service, Saluki, Illini, Carl Sandburg, Illinois Zephyr, Missouri River Runner, Heartland Flyer, Cascades and Hoosier State.

So really more of the long distance trains.

The benefit of amtrak is downtown to downtown…

So true. Chicago, Washington, New York. All have better connected rail hubs than airports if you’re trying to get downtown.

Is it just me or do the fares look comparable to Southwest for flying from these cities on the longer routes.
