Via Dansdeals, bakeries, caterers, and dairy shops will no longer earn 3x with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. The 3x Dining category is now limited to restaurants, fast food, coffee shops, and bars.
This was confirmed in a secure message with a Chase supervisor, and others vouch for caterers no longer earning 3x as well:
…as of 8/30/2016 transactions billed as Bakeries, Caterers, & Dairy product stores will no longer qualify as accelerated rewards earnings. This is for all Chase products to remain fair and consistent.
Apparently, the Sapphire Preferred card also won’t earn 2x points on these purchases, as Chase wrote that the change was to keep it consistent with all Chase products. Let us know if you have a recent data point on the Sapphire Preferred.
Catering is a big limit since people and businesses often have large bills there. Bakery is a pretty common expense. And dairy probably excludes things like ice cream shops and the like.
