Discover Now Allowing Product Conversions To Discover it Miles Card

Discover offers two primary credit cards: Discover it & Discover it Miles (and variations such as Discover it Secured). Discover limit you to a total of two credit cards and you must wait one year in between cards as well. Up until now it hasn’t been possible to product change a Discover it to a Discover it Miles card.

Reddit user anime4all was sent an e-mail stating that they are no able to complete this conversion by calling 1-800-DISCOVER. The Discover website still says this type of conversion is not possible, but I suspect that will soon be updated.

The main reason people want the Discover it Miles card is because it earns 1.5% cash back, that’s not that attractive considering there are plenty of options that earn 2% cash back on all purchases (or more). Both the Discover it & Discover it Miles cards earn double rewards at the end of your first year though, making the Discover it Miles card 3% cash back the first year. I assume product changes won’t be possible within this first year, if that’s the case why would people want to make this product change?

The answer is that most people won’t and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it. The Discover it earns 5% cash back in rotating categories and that should prove far more valuable than a relatively useless 1.5% cash back card. The Discover it Miles card does come with an annual $30 airplane WiFi reimbursement that some people might find useful though.

The real question is, will Discover allow product conversions done in reverse? For example, can I product change a Discover it Miles into a regular Discover it card? Even if they do you might be better of simply cancelling the Discover it Miles card and applying for another Discover it card directly (well make sure you get the $50/$50 bonus) because that way you should get the doubling in your first year.
