Today is the last day that you can transfer SPG points to Virgin America points. The transfer rate is 1:1, but for every 20,000 SPG points you transfer you’ll receive an additional 5,000 Virgin American points. You can then transfer those Virgin America points to Alaska miles at 1:1.3. This means that 20,000 SPG points will net you 32,500 Alaska points.
After today you’ll still be able to transfer SPG points to Alaska directly (1:1 rate with the 5,000 point bonus) but you’ll lose the ability to transfer to Virgin America and then Alaska. Thankfully SPG gave people some notice of these changes, but today is your last day to make this transfer.
I personally find that I value hotel points (and especially SPG points) more than airline miles as I have more than enough miles (flying economy and having most flights paid for by work will do that to you). But everybody is in a different situation so work out if this deal makes sense to you or not.
Remember that transferring hotel points to Southwest is also counting towards the companion pass again until March 31st, 2017 and 90,000 SPG/270,000 Marriott points is enough for 120,000 Southwest miles + 7 nights at category 1-5 property.
Have you already transferred SPG points to Virgin America? Do you plan to do it today? Let me know in the comments below.
