Update 3/5/19: You can now register for this promo.
The Offer
- Starting on March 19th, 2019 Marriott will launch a new promotion called ‘Double Take’, you’ll earn double points starting from your second stay.
The Fine Print
- Must required by May 21st, 2019
- Valid for stays from March 19th, 2019 until June 4th, 2019
Our Verdict
Very poor promotion, I would have expected something that is much more lucrative for Marriott elites given all of the issues Marriott has had integrating SPG and the general lack of polish the program has. I always just register for these promotions anyway, but double points will make absolutely zero difference to my booking habits especially considering it only kicks in after the second stay. I’ll repost when the promotion actually goes live.
Hat tip to Live From A Lounge
Does anybody know if the first stay is a reward stay and the second stay is paid for, If that qualifies. Probably have to pay for both stays but I was just wondering.
Just a warning on this. According to my ambassador (who double checked twice), a “stay” has to be at least 2 nights. When i questioned her on this, she pointed to the terms where it states
“*A “stay” is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.”
Now typically i know that mean that even if you book 2 nights back to back as single reservations, it counts as 1 stay. However she is stating that in this instance it also means you need to have at least 2 nights, 1 night is not “consecutive nights” for the purpose of this promotion.
Take it with a grain of salt, I have never found these people to be more knowledgeable then the bloggers on these things but for some reason i am avoiding re-organizing for this promotion. I don’t want to get Bonvoyed on it.
Any data points on this?
The promotion just opened yesterday, so there can’t be any DPs until people have tried….
It seems since this posted that they added an additional bonus for primary cardholders of the Bonvoy cards. “Earn Even More. Marriott Bonvoy U.S. Card Members earn an exclusive bonus of 500 additional points for weekend stays — starting with the first stay.” 500 points is pretty weak but it’s something.
I stayed twice at Best Western. Just got free night email! Thanks to this awesome web site!
https://www.marriott.com/loyalty/DU19. Page not found. It’s also coming up 404 from Marriott’s own page. Whoever runs their IT I pity the fool.
I think this is a pretty decent promotion for their target business traveler who stays in mid or higher end hotels. Better than something lame like giving 1000 points for trying a new brand or staying for a second night when those may not be viable choices for that person.
I’m much more adept at airline promos than hotel promos. Can someone help me?
I have a Marriott stay booked by a client through Hotels.com for Mar 16-23. Should generate a lot of points as the rate is fairly high, but not sure how that works as it’s through an OTA. Would this stay count since it starts before the promotion but concludes after? Would it be worthwhile to book 1 cheap night somewhere else so this stay gets 10x?
So confused.
You unfortunately won’t earn anything as stays booked through an OTA don’t earn points, unlike flights where you do earn miles. Stays have to be booked directly with Marriott in order to earn points.
That said, the stay would earn Welcome Rewards with Hotels.com. The way that works is that you earn 1 credit per night worth 10% of that night’s room rate before tax. After you have 10 credits (i.e. after you’ve stayed 10 nights), you can redeem that cumulative total towards a free night up to that value.
e.g. Let’s say you book 5 nights at $75 per night and 5 nights at $100 per night (both amounts before tax). You’d earn 5*$7.50 and 5*$10, so a total of $87.50.
This would be earned by the person booking the stay though, so as your client booked it, they might be the one earning the Welcome Rewards rather than you.
The terms say, “Remember to book direct to earn points.” and “Rooms booked through most third party online retailers and select travel agency bookings are ineligible to earn for this promotion.”
So I assume you would need to book direct to get the bonus since that policy also applies to the base points.
I would assume it would count since your check-out is after the start of the promotion, but guessing you would only get double points for the nights after the start. I suggest calling/emailing Marriott and see if you can get a recording/note of how it works.
For these kinds of promotions, does an award stay typically count as a ‘stay’ to trigger points? I have an award stay from March 12 – 17, and then a paid stay later in March.
Given award stays count towards elite status, I would hope so, but they aren’t eligible for bonus points, obviously.
“A ‘stay’ is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity. Rooms booked through most third party online retailers and select travel agency bookings are ineligible to earn for this promotion. The member receiving this offer has been targeted and the offer is not transferable. ExecuStay, Marriott Executive Apartments and Marriott Vacation Club® owner-occupied weeks are not eligible for bonus points and nights spent while redeeming an award are not eligible for bonus points. Only one room per hotel is counted toward a member’s nights or stay. Members electing to earn miles are not eligible for this promotion. Does “consecutive nights” mean a “stay” is only two or more nights?
This is the link that worked for me: https://www.marriott.com/loyalty/promotion.mi?promotion=DU19
Actually, I’ve been Bonvoyed. Sigh.
Unfortunately, we cannot register you for this promotion, but if you call our Guest Services number, we would be happy to answer any question you have. Call 800-450-4442 In the United States and Canada, or one of our worldwide numbers.
My wife and I got that message too, but I think the error message is an error itself as it’s showing we’re registered on the promotions page.
Yeah, I saw that. I do like saying I’ve been Bonvoyed tho, haha.
