Office Depot/Max infrequently has promotions offering $15 off when you purchase $300 in Visa or Mastercard gift cards. The fine print always states there is a limit of 1 per household/business, but this is not generally enforceable as you can just go to a different store (or same store). According to a reader a memo has been sent out stating that when a rewards account is linked to the purchase the limit will be enforced.
This was supposed to start on 5/11/18 but there are numerous datapoints of this not being the case (e.g people successfully purchasing multiples and using their rewards account). The reader who saw the memo had this happen to them so it’s also possible it’s slowly being rolled. Their direct experience is as follows:
What happened would be my cards would go through, be approved on my bank’s end then OD/OM would auto refund the transaction and read “Card Problem” this happened with 4 cards (I called my bank and confirmed it). Then we did it without the Rewards Card linked and poof same card went through perfectly.
I’ve marked this as a rumor for now, but this is a trustworthy reader and I doubt they would lie about this. I guess we will see what happens during the next promotion.
