[Expired] Office Depot/Max Stores: Buy $300 In Visa Giftcards & Get $15 Instant Discount (Limit 10)

Deal has ended, view more Office Depot/Max deals by clicking here.

Update 4/14/24: Deal is back for 4/14-4/20, I assume limit 10. (ht MoonWorth2430)

The Offer

Check your Office Depot/Max store for the following deal:

  • Buy $300 in Visa gift cards and get $15 discounted instantly at the register.

The Fine Print

  • In-store only

Our Verdict

Buy a $200 Visa gift card and a $100 Visa gift card or buy two $200 Visa gift cards. The best way to maximize is to buy three $200 Visa gift cards. It should be possible to get more than one $15 discount in a single checkout.

Fees are $5-$8 per card, but can be more-than-offset by this $15 instant discount. They usually offer a deal the week following Staples.

Use a card like the INK Cash/Plus which earns 5x at office supply stores. Also note, Dosh offers 2% back at Office Depot/Max and Rakuten in-store offers 5x/5%,  though the terms on these exclude gift cards from earning. Some people might have a Chase Offer/Bank Amerideals for Office Depot as well.

Is anyone else struggling with the new giftcards*com website? I can’t figure out how to register my cards for online purchases.

Haven’t had an issue myself, registered 3 yesterday. Have you tried clearing your cache or another browser?

Did you actually get the card from that site? The old site’s registration is still up and I used it today. https://mygift.giftcardmall.com/

The new site’s registration link is https://www.giftcards.com/activate

I only had an issue w the new site when trying to use their feature that lets you change the address of an already-registered card. IIRC, that card was initially registered on the old site.

You can change the address of an already-registered card? Cool, never knew that. Of course, never needed it but nice to know it’s there. 🙂

No, I bought them at Office Max. They’re already activated, so it gives me an error when I use that feature and then try to change the address.

You’d update the address after clicking the Check Balance link. I just updated one.

Can you buy the “Five Back” or “ Grocery “ Visa cards for this promo? Save a couple bucks if so.

anyone has the source of the promotion? walked in the officemax store. the guy said the limit is two cards. Tried to show the promotion (the limit 10) on the officedepot weekly ad. I even called the customer service but failed to find the one.
Anyone can share the sign in your store? thanks.

Office Depot seems to always be a disaster for me. Manager was aware of the promo but said she could not override the transaction. Before ringing up, she said there might be a 24-hour period before you can use the card. I went ahead anyway and it was a giant fail. Three – $200 cards. Nope. 2. Nope. 1 Nope. $200 and $100, nope. Will wait for Staples next week.

Hi Waldo, Was your credit card locked by Chase after you attempted the purchase?

Today I got 3 x $200 at my local store and triggered the standard discount of $30.
I didn’t see any signage in store with regards to this “sale.” There were plenty of cards available.

These were the new cardboard VGCs and expire 2032.
Manager was off today so the new, scraggly assistant manager rang me up.
He insisted that I needed to give my rewards number, “to get the discount.”

Checked the balances before/after and they all loaded/drained.
Drained within 2 hours after purchase.

May i ask what do you do drain them? been trying to come up with ideas or asking for input on what to put them towards. I’m new to this and appreciate your time.

Most people use these for organic spend, using a 5% credit card to buy and pay bills they wouldn’t ordinarily get 5% on. Those few avenues of converting to cash are closely held to the vest with those that can still do so they can continue to do it for as long as possible.

I pay taxes/estimated taxes with them. You won’t be saving much but the fee for spending $200 with a debit card is a little less than the fee for spending $200 with a credit card.

I doubt that there are any strategies to drain a gift card that you can replicate on a national basis. natural spend is the “easy button” strategy.

Just got it earlier , 1×200$ and 1×100$ paid $299.9
this wasn’t advertised in the store, I took them and went to the cashier and asked her, she said yup, promo is on. So don’t be discouraged if you don’t see a sign in the store

Did you already purchase? If so, do they have the offer posted in the store? It’s usually on top of the gc stand. If so, I’d push them to give a manual credit.

They scanned three $200 cards but didn’t see any discount, so I didnt buy any. THere’s nothing on the top of the gc stand in the store I went to. Not sure it matters, but It’s an Office Max, not an Office Depot, but I don’t think it’s not closing.

Roy Do you recall which Visa cards you were trying to buy? I’ve seen issues at my location a couple months back with the older stock with the lower fee that were not giving the discount.

I pulled the three $200 Visa cards left there, but I don’t which kinds they are. One of the three looks different from the other two, but all with $6.95 fee. I checked the back of the cards but didn’t find any useful information to identify the issuer.

Celia 🔗 (@guest_1831203)

That could have been the issue, being the old 6.95 fee. Not saying it was, but that it had happened before with the old stock.

This is a nationwide promo hard coded into the PoS system. Only exception would be “going out of business” store that’s already been handed over to a liquidation company (uncommon), or you didn’t ring up at least $300 in VGCs. There is no ‘secret manager override’ to get the promo… just manager security numbers for when you buy > $500 in one transaction.

Best per dollar maximization is actually 9. However, at 5+, you will have to provide FinCEN info, which 1) some don’t like the ‘privacy’ issue, and 2) many cashiers don’t know what to do when the info page pops up.

Chuck Could we update this posting, like the Mastercard posting, to mention buying three $200 cards? (Proposed new text in bold.)
Buy a $200 Visa gift card and a $100 Visa gift card or buy two $200 Visa gift cards. Best way to maximize is to buy three $200 Visa gift cards.
