American Express has closed the CFO centurion lounge in terminal 3 as that terminal is undergoing ‘modernization’. A new lounge in terminal 3 is expected to open in Q3 2027. In the meantime American Express plan to have a temporary lounge located in terminal 2 in mid to late June.
Explains why my last visit was so poor. They couldn’t keep up with the stock of hot food. Bartenders were still great of course.
Honestly it was a complete pain to get to E Gates from the lounge. 1m diversion turned into a 15m treck
Damn it. Flying out of SFO to Tokyo this weekend. Now I have to go to Club which is at other Terminal.
Going to the other side of an airport and adding a 20 minute trek just to eat some mediocre buffet food is an interesting take.
Agreed, thought there was a easier airside connection. Have to go all the way from G to Terminal 1. Skipping.
Nope. Not hiking to another terminal for The Club food or booze.
So what is the go-to lounge now in SFO? Flying there this weekend.
We like going to The Club with Priority Pass.
i actually have a lot of united flights and frequented it. but the T3 construction has been progressing, so it makes sense. the lounge itself is okay, it’s no sapphire lounge like at bos, but it’s okay. it’s just usually packed.
What would make sense when the reopen the existing lounge in 2027 is to keep this relocated lounge as well. Will be convenient to a lot more people.
The last thing that any Centurion lounge needs is “a lot more people”.
That would be a problem if BBT’s suggestion was to keep the lounge in Terminal 2 and never reopen the one in Terminal 3
Having both open would at worst mean the Terminal 3 lounge would be just as crowded as it would be without the Terminal 2 lounge existing, and ideally it would take pressure off by redirecting some people to the other location
20 minutes walking from any terminal. i bet amex pissed the sfo admin for some reason
The current route to the lounge is so far out of the way for any reasonable person to go to unless you are on an international Star Alliance flight. That’s right, it’s only easily accessible to those flying Star Allinace international routes whereas other alliances have a hard time getting to it. Even flying domestically on United is a difficult journey. This is a great reason to call up AMEX when you’re AF is due and another complaint about the lounge’s location. They should have built the lounge originally in a central location instead of clustered towards the United hub part of it.
I’ve had tons of United domestic flights departing from the F gates, just minutes away from the the Centurion Lounge. It was quite a bit of a walk from terminal 1 when I had a Delta flight so I used the the ClubSFO lounge instead.
“a difficult journey” lmao. You could probably use the extra walk. We all could
From everything I have read, there is no new lounge opening in 2027. It is just the same lounge they closed, but you will actually be able to get to it because all the construction around it will be further along.
Which make sense, they put a lot of money into expanding it recently and it’s still in nice shape.
If the new lounge at SFO is anything like the new lounge at SEA, it’ll be 1/3rd the size it needs to be. You will literally have more people waiting to get into the lounge at peak times than the number of people actually in the lounge.
The temp one is reported to be noticeably smaller so could definitely be a mess.
It’s always baffling to wait 45 minutes for the SEA Amex lounge, get in, and half the seats are empty.
I guess I’ve been lucky. Been to the SEA lounge maybe 10 times now, and have never had a long wait. It’s also never that full when I go either. Between that and the Delta lounge, Platinum holders have pretty good options at SEA, imo.
That’s a shame, because the United Club nearby is often packed to the brim. And, if you have an early flight at the International Terminal, the UC there doesn’t open until late (like 7:30AM), which is often during boarding for 8AM, SFO-EWR, etc. Oh well. Hope the new Centurion is even nicer when finally done.
