Small Changes To Comments – Improved Speed & Comment Voting

We’ve made a few small changes to the comment system here at Doctor of Credit, the main change is that the speed should be vastly improved. This should help with overall pageload times. The other change we’ve made is this you can now vote on comments, if you like a specific comment then click the up arrow otherwise click the down arrow. I ask that you use the down votes sparingly, the main point of voting at the moment is that you can also sort comments by ‘most voted’ now as well (newest and oldest are also still options). These changes are ahead of user profiles that we will hopefully add sometime in Q1 of 2019.

Over the past few days, I noticed it’s not possible to subscribe to certain posts. Maybe too many people are already subscribed as both examples have many comments:

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/share-your-sofi-invest-referrals-here/
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/purchase-up-to-700-in-coins-from-the-u-s-mint-make-100-profit/

It always says “subscription fault”.

Can the email link that takes you to the comment on the website be turned into a hyperlink?
If not, perhaps there could be a line break so that the link starts at the beginning of a new row. And also possibly remove the “.” at the end of the link.

Thank you

Mike Thought I would try to answer this, but I am slightly confused, because a link on a web-page or e-mail is a hyperlink. I assume you are talking about the user responded to your comment e-mail? And, if click the link in the e-mail, and when the page is long, the link doesn’t work properly. It brings you to the correct page, but not to the comment.

The only workaround I have found for that is to load the entire page in your browser by scrolling and search for the comment. Every comment has a unique comment number.

My biggest complaint is if viewing in a mobile browser, the entire list of comments usually doesn’t show up. So you have to select Desktop browser, and now you need a magnifying glass to read the comments. (Good thing Inspector Gadget carries one.) But more and more people have replaced the home computer with a phone, and I think they are missing out on a lot of comments and hence ask redundant questions, or not see other links in comments, etc. Granted, some people are just lazy/uninformed, so that’s not always a valid excuse.

I imagine this system is a sacrifice for speed and bandwidth. The article is the most important part, usually. I would suggest archiving old comments into “click here to get last years comments”, so pages that are excruciatingly long are shorter, but, I am not sure that is feasible. And it’s already the idea by the current system..

I would suggest at least getting rid of comments on the most visited pages… like the best bank bonus page. Who cares about 5 year old comments about a bank that no longer exists? Make everyone comment on the actual “product page” to spread out content. Just my 2 cents.  William Charles

The link in the email that is a text link, meaning I cannot click on it, but have to copy and paste it into a new browser window.
The only clickable hyperlink in the notification email is the unsubscribe link.

That sounds like a setting in your e-mail client. Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo (edit: web versions) aren’t that way, by default anyway. By default anything http://, https, or even www. should be a hyperlink, unless you have something blocking that. Could be browser settings, anti-virus. anti-spam, security software, parental controls… Without knowing your setup or how you access your e-mail, I am just throwing things out there.

I thought you were referring to the link not taking you to the comment, which is a product of the scrolling thing I mentioned.

Another setting to check for is HTML only, or Text only. The unsubscribe link is full html. The body of those e-mails is text.

Here is the fix for the email template if interested:

You can view and respond to the comment by clicking the following link: $VARIABLE_FOR_COMMENT_LINK

The variable needs to be enclosed in <a href=" and then close the tag. I cannot post this because otherwise the comment system will turn in into an actual link.

That's how the clickable unsubscribe link in the email is set up.

Yes, it is fixed. Makes it easier instead of using copy and paste.

Comments can no longer be sorted and no additional comments are loaded when scrolling down.

Mike It’s a known issue, based on an e-mail conversation I had with  Chuck today. I tested it on multiple devices and had the same problem, as well as only a small portion of comments loading. Sounds like they believe it to be a server connection issue. Hopefully it gets fixed soon. FYI Svy Dan - Legal Bank Robber IS250 arizonapv

The new post notification emails are sent out with the generic title “New Comment”.

Yes, makes it hard to find the topic of the message just by looking at the generic subject line.

William Charles,  Chuck I know this post talks about Comments, but I wanted to check/request a few things about the overall site.

1. Is it possible to get the Category name of the post on the actual post page itself and that be clickable to find other posts in that category.
Ex: This Post could surface the”Misc” category after the post title and clicking on it would should the same page as clicking the category header on the main pages.
Ideally this post should be tagged as “Site News” category to be able to filter for things specific to this Site

2. Is it possible to see a list of call Categories of posts? The Top Nav links are about specific topic and publishing a list of Categories will help in discoverability of those posts.

3. Can we suggest edits to the category of a post? Can a post have more than 1 category?

I’m excited about the voting changes and the potential ability to be able to easily find the most helpful/useful info in the comments. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment speed change. I’m on mobile 99% of the time, and sometimes I need to scroll down pretty far past last comment in order to get the rest of the comments to load. If it’s possible at some point, would you consider an optional ability to choose between endless comments and a “load more” button, at least for the Mobile theme? Or possibly a “load all” option that isn’t a saved preference.

Why not both? Have a Load All button at the top of the comments, and a Load More button at the bottom. Then each person can easily choose what they want to happen each time.

Since having the opportunity to delete our posts does not seem to be something you can implement, what about giving us the chance to preview the post before submitting? Sometimes re-reading it in another window is all it takes to catch errors. I do wish you’d implement a delete feature though. A delete feature is more valuable to me than voting on comments. I have not noticed any increase in speed in loading posts. If a post is excessively long due to many comments, it still takes forever to scroll down to the last post. Yes, one can sort in reverse order, but I do like seeing posts in chronological order. And there are other reasons why I like seeing all the posts on one page. I haven’t re-tested it, but the search feature isn’t quite everything it should be.

His standard answer for deletion needs is to edit the comment to blank out the contents, during the 15-minute edit window.

Yes, and then to just do another post to clarify things if the window has closed.

I’d like to see the vote button permanently change color after you’ve clicked it from that browser/computer, if that’s possible on this comment system. Currently there’s no way to tell which comments you’ve already upvoted, until you click it again and it thinks about it and then it tells you that you already voted.

I agree with Ann. I’d like to see some indication that I voted. Something I noticed that is kind of interesting, I can upvote, then I can down vote, then I can upvote again. One cannot upvote twice in a row, but you can uptick and then downtick and then uptick again. Interesting. Even though I’ve already voted, it lets me change my mind.

I hope the voting system doesn’t get abused in referral posts.
