The Fine Print

  • In-store only
  • Valid Sunday 7/12/15 until Saturday 7/18/15
  • Limit one rebate per household

Our Verdict

This offer is from the weaker ones but it’s nice for someone who has a credit card which earns bonus points at office supply stores.

Mastercard gift cards aren’t so easy to unload in Walmart, but they work fine as debit cards in Target.

All my cards purchased yesterday worked fine at WM they failed previously. The only conclusion of this “saga” I can make is that it was “activation process” that took too long

Glad it worked for you after all. If this affects all WMs or Kate’s, I suspect we’ll hear about it on the blogs. I check Boarding Area. This won’t go unnoticed or unmentioned if it really becomes a system change. Activation shouldn’t take that long but I know with Visa I remember about 6 months back they had activation issues. Took 3 days to activate my cards. They said their systems were hacked at the time. Great.

My experience:
Purchased 8 x $200 Mastercard GCs yesterday. After 7 hours of failed attempts to activate, went back to Staples and was told to wait for 24 hr mark for activation – as is printed on the receipt.
Today the cards still failed activation (duh… !) and I went back to the store; after making some calls in his office, the manager refunded the full $1600 plus fees that I paid . All in all this failure took hours of my time.
What a PITA !

Why the hurry for a refund?

Intended to use them as gifts to some of my employees (interns) in the same manner as I normally do when the Visas are on rebate.
The Staples manager offered a complete refund as the only solution and mentioned that “corporate” told him to do so and send the un-activated GCs back to them.

Got it. Nice employer you are, interns lost out on this one.

Had the same experience as you. Bought 2, had to wait 24hrs until US Bank activated them, then 1 still won’t work. Staples Cust Svc and store manager won’t help and US Bank wants every piece of personal info under the sun FAXED to re-issue. Lesson learned – these U.S. Bank cards are not reliable. Any future DOC posts regarding these awful cards should be noted as such. Total PITA now to get refunded and definitely NOT worth the time/effort/UR points …

Yep. Same experience here. Had to fax copy of he card and some personal info to US Bank. Bought 9 and waited 24 hrs. 7 activated and 2 did not. After faxing 2 days ago, 1 activated and 1 still not. PITA is right with USB. Once got a $500 VGC at grocery and the card turned out to be fraud instantly as I tried to unload immediately and was told this. Had to fax same info. Never had that happen until last couple of months. They do not accept email copies either, what a bunch of bozos.

Could not load MC using KATE. Got code 51. It worked fine last round of Staples sale on MCs

PIN issue? Did you set your own PIN, use the PIN provided in the package (some types of M/C) or just use the last 4 digits as the PIN. Since you have done this before I would assume you would not have entered the last 4 digits unless you called and set the pin to be as such.

I used PIN that came with card pkg

Then that’s a concern, since I was going to Staples this week as well to get the MCs. I might do $400 and give it a shot at my Kate just to see. If I do, I’ll report back whether this might be a widespread issue.

I went to diff WM. And now I m not sure what to make of this..
Tried a cashier with 2 cards that failed yesterday. And it went through w/o any issue.

“Activation time” should not be a reason cause I was in WM ~5 hrs later after I bought MCs. Unless MC activation process is really messed up and takes that long.

M/Cs are just as easy to unload at WM as Visa. No problem there, at least at the kiosk. Just got to work out the PIN, which is either included behind the card in a secret compartment which is easy to miss – or – you just call and set the pin. Of course with Visa, just the last 4 digits is fine.

Still this offer is a pain because most gift card sites won’t let you sell a Staples card for less than $20. They’ve done this promo before with $15 GC, but thankfully most of the time it’s $20. If someone wants to net $0 cost, then could redeem some UR points to cover the $14 costs for 2 x $200 M/C. End up with only 600 UR points per rebate that way but you would have a $15 Staples GC you could use at the store.
