American Express Will Not Be Implementing A Transfer Limit To Delta

Earlier this year American Express announced that cardholders would be able to transfer a maximum of 250,000 miles to Delta from their American Express Membership Rewards SPG accounts. Today American Express has announced that this limit is no longer going into effect. They also announced that they would be extending their co-branded partnership with a new multi-year deal that will cover the next six years, we asked for comment regarding the financial details regarding this new deal. Below is a their non-answer.

In terms of the financial details, like with any of our partner agreements, I cannot discuss the specific economic arrangements of the new contract. However, I can tell you that when our long-term contracts are renewed, they can initially reflect the level of change in market economics that have evolved over many years.

I know this won’t affect most of you, but for those who do find value in flying Delta and value them as a transfer partner, this is probably welcome news. It’s also not surprising they are extending their co-branded partnership, given that they’ve been partners since 1996. When asked about why this change was made, they responded as follows:

As part of American Express’ continued partnership with Delta and our commitment to our mutual customers, we have collectively decided to not implement the annual points transfer cap.
