The Offer
Amex is sending out targeted spend offers within their Amex Offers program. These are general spend offer for bonus points on any spend, and they are only found on Membership Rewards-earning cards.
Here are a few samples that friends have gotten:
- Get 6,000 MR points when spending $3,000 in one or more transactions (2x extra points per dollar); deal can be repeated 3x for a total of 18,000 points
- Get 6,000 MR points when spending $6,000 in one or more transactions (1x extra points per dollar); deal can be repeated 3x for a total of 18,000 points
- Get 7,500 MR points when spending $7,500 in one or more transactions (1x extra points per dollar); deal can be repeated 3x for a total of 22,500 points
- Get 5,000 MR points when spending $5,000 in one or more transactions (1x extra points per dollar); deal can be repeated 3x for a total of 15,000 points
The first deal seems to be found on Everyday Preferred, though it’s possible other cards will have it too. That one is the best offer since it’s 2x extra per dollar. The other deals are all 1x extra per dollar with varying thresholds to hit the bonus.
The Fine Print
- Expires 9/29/17
- When calculating the bonus points earned on the Everyday Preferred, these bonus points will not be multiplied
- You do not need to do large purchases to meet this bonus; meeting the threshold with small purchases will also yield the same bonus
- Fine Print (pictured below) sounds to me like AU spend does NOT count toward this bonus, which is surprising (“such as Additional Cards”)
Our Verdict
You may have to scroll down a bit to find these offers, but it’s worth checking your MR cards to see if they are eligible. I assume these offers would only show on the primary card, not an AU card.
If you got the $3k/6k offer on your Everyday Preferred like a couple of my friends did, that’s an excellent 3.5x everywhere by meeting the threshold properly. And if you still have some of your $6k grocery bandwidth available, you can get 6.5x on your $6k in grocery spend!
The 1x offer is okay, though you can always get 2x MR everywhere with the new Blue for Business Plus card (limited to $50k per year). There are a few reasons why you might want to use this offer instead:
- If you don’t have the Blue for Business Plus card
- To increase your 2x everywhere bandwidth
- If you spend $5k+ on the Platinum card which gets 1.5x MR; with this offer it’ll be 2.5x
- Bonus categories on the Premier Rewards Gold will get an extra 1x with this offer
