Discover Releases Q3 2017 Categories: Restaurants

Discover has released the categories that will earn 5% cash back for quarter three of 2017 (July-September) for Discover it cardholders and it’s restaurants. They define restaurants as any of the following: classified as full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias and fast food locations.

We still don’t know what categories the Chase Freedom will offer for Q3. But Citi Dividend will be offering 5% cash back on airlines & at Hilton. I’m personally a fan of 5x on restaurant purchases, as there aren’t many cards that offer a category bonus on those purchases [read: best credit cards for restaurant purchases]. Some people won’t be as big fans due to the fact it’s almost impossible to manufacture spend on this category and also the fact that the Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3x Chase UR.

Some people are also being targeted for Amazon in Q3 as an extra 5% category on top of restaurants.

Is it possible to buy restaurant GC’s in order to max out this category? I’ve been doing a lot of traveling, lately, and thus having to eat out frequently.

Yup, restaurant gift cards in-store will work. Online – YMMV.

I love the category. But just one category?!? Bummer.

Bummer indeed. Now if there was some restaurant which sold Visa or MC cards.

This is the category I spend most of my money, so I’m happy!

One way to get groceries out restaurants: small, family-owned, ‘ethnic’ (in the parlance of our times) restaurants (e.g. Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern) often sell some limited groceries and code as restaurant purchases.

I imagine it’s restaurants *in the US* only, right? I can’t find this on the Discover website, though.

I think Discover’s categories extend internationally. You can chat with them to check this out.

Anything classified as a restaurant that sells other gift cards? Any roadside diners possibly?

Starbucks should work. So should Chipotle. I am sure there would be a lot of options.
