Discover Reveals 5% Categories for Q3 & Q4 + Qualification for Gas Category

Discover Categories

All four quarters of the 5% category bonus with Discover are now showing on the Discover site. We knew about the gas & transportation in Q1 and restaurants and movies in Q2. They’ve now added Q3 as Home Improvement and Amazon, and Q4 as Amazon and more.

  • Q3 2015 was Home Improvement, Amazon, and department stores. (Sears.com, for example, is a department store.) It may be that Discover is removing department stores this year.
  • Q4 2015 was Amazon, clothing and department stores. We don’t know what will be included in 2016; Discover promises, “Amazon.com and more.”

Here is what 2015 looked like:

As always, you’ll earn 5% on up to $1,500 in spend. And for those who are enrolled in the Double Cashback offer, it will end up as 10% back at year’s end.

Discover Qualifies the Gas Category

On Reddit, someone notes that Discover has added a new qualification to the terms of Q1 gas category which is currently ongoing.

Purchases made at gas stations affiliated with superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs may not be eligible.

Presumably, they mean to limit these gas stations that are affiliated with other stores since they don’t always code in the system as gas. (Others have conspiracy ideas having to do with buying grocery gift cards at these gas stations.)

I’m not entirely sure that this language is new, but it’s worth keeping in mind, in any case, that gas stations attached to supermarkets and the like may not count. See also What Counts as Gas & Transportation for 5x with Freedom and Discover? for more info on the Q1 category.

I’m thinking of applying for the Discover It card and understand that I would get double rewards for the year. I’m assuming by getting the card now, I will be able to benefit from the 2016 Q1 categories as well as the 2017 Q1 categories?

I don’t see a reason it wouldn’t. 7-11 is not affiliated with any superstore, supermarket, or warehouse club that I know of.

Although, now that we’re on the topic… Have you seen any OVs hanging around your 7-11 recently? In my area, all the 7-11s are completely dry of OVs and it seems that it’s been that way for some time.

I find plenty in my area. But it seems like they are getting more and more strict with no CC for gift cards. I have to do more trial and error now or wait until someone i know will sell them to me is working.
