The Offer
Via Money Meta Game (add this blog to your feedly if you haven’t already, going to be very useful for the giftcard reselling space). Also follow him on Twitter.
- Receive a 20% discount at Safeway on all GAP Brand gift cards (e.g GAP Kids, Old Navy, Banana Republic). You need to add this offer to your just for U account and use your loyalty card at check out to receive this discount.
Update: Some people report only receiving the $5 off discount, rather than a flat 20%. YMMV. You could still get 20% off if you purchased $25 gift cards, but that is a lot more work.
The Fine Print
- No limit on the amount you can purchase
- Valid until May 9th, 2015
Our Verdict
They offered a previous deal which was similar, but it was $5 off which meant you had to purchase $25 gift cards to get the 20% discount which is a real pain. This deal is much better as it’s a true 20% discount so you can purchase larger increments. You’ll be able to sell these gift cards for 80% of face value (you can get 82% for reselling GAP Kids giftcards to Monster Gift cards or 81.5% to Giftcards.com which will accept eGiftcards which might be easier).
Obviously this deal only really makes sense if you’ve got a credit card that earns at a high rate on grocery purchases, or if you wanted to meet a minimum spend requirement. If you had a card that earned 5% on grocery store purchases and could get 82% of face value on the gift cards here is your profit on a $100 gift card:
- $100 gift card for $80 = $4 cash back in rewards
- Sell $100 gift card for 82% of face value = $2 profit
So you’d be netting $6 or making 6% profit, which isn’t too bad at all. If you’re new to gift card reselling, read this post first. Also read this recent negative experience to fully appreciate how things can go wrong.

I got 20% off 3 $100 cards. The cashier was really excited to find out about the sale. I didn’t do the promotion last time. Why do the sites bother buying the cards at different rates for the Gap family? Does the resale interchangability apply only to sales where you dont have to mail the cards in?
I don’t know why they buy them at different rates. For physical cards I can understand because the end customer might be confused if they were sent an Old Navy card after buying a Gap card (or similar) even though they would work fine. For digital cards, it just doesn’t make sense though, I would bet their systems can’t handle flipping cards between brands based on demand.
I’m also curious about the sell rates of the sites. Do they adjust to the supply/demand in some time period? I would have assumed that they lower their rates in response to sudden influx when these deals occur. I know Gift card granny aggregates the rates but is there any place that has historic rates made available?
Yes, they DEFINITELY adjust their rates AND lower the volume of cards they will accept. Take all the info on Gift Card Granny with a grain of salt – you’ll find most of the resellers have low limits on the volume they’ll accept. And when this promo was going on last month, several refused to accept any gcs, because they were swamped with people trying to unload them. My advice is to go low, go slow and test the waters.
My offer is $5 off $25 and I’m sitting this deal out. Too much work, too long to get repaid (typically about a month for a check to hit your account – if no hiccups with your order). Better to just keep doing my 5% and recycle my cash multiple times during the time it will take to get repaid from the slow-to-pay gift card resellers…
Seems different people have different promotion. Last time I got “20% instantly” and this time my “Just 4 you” offer is “$5 instantly” for $25 purchase. Can I check out 2 or more(maybe 20) cards with each $25 on it at one transaction or do I have to check out $25 at each transaction to get the entire 20%? Appreciate any one already tested last time could let me know, otherwise I will explore out by myself.
Interesting, did anybody else get the $5 off deal this time around? What did they see last time?
I got the $5 off also 🙁
Yep, I also got a bunch of $5 off gc offers.
I had the $5 off last time and had to buy them in $25 denominations. I was able to buy a lot at once though, I think $500 worth in 1 transaction was the most I did.
It’s kind of funny, the checkout people don’t bat an eye if I ask to put $300 on one card, but seem to freak out if I try to buy 12 $25 cards. One Safeway had me go to the customer service desk and they copied down my driver’s license number. Today, I stopped at 3 Safeway’s and bought $600 (2 x $300) and two of them didn’t even look at my driver’s license.
I seem I recall that if selling eGiftcards, you could sell any of the Gap brand cards as whatever brand you want. For example, I have a $100 GapKids card and can sell it as a Banana Republic card. This is useful if there is a difference in payout between the sub-brands. Does this ring a bell with anyone else?
That would be a good deal. To start, I don’t see Gap Kids as 82% on Monster Gift Cards. Regardless, my VONS didn’t seem to sell any Gap Kids. My second best option was to sell Old Navy for 81.5% on GiftCards.com, but it didn’t show up in their list, so I sold it for 81% on SaveYa.
You should be able to sell a normal GAP gift card as Gap Kids or similar – as any GAP branded gift card will work at any other GAP affiliated store. Looks like Monster has already dropped their rate on Gap Kids gift cards though.
Yes, that’s true.
Don’t forget about the fuel points! For every $500 in gift cards you buy (for $400), you get $1 off per gallon up to 25 gallons. This is another 6% back if you can max it out.
Speaking of which, has anyone figured out a way to profit off of excess fuel points? I’m swimming in them and don’t even drive that often. I could hang around a gas station and try to sell fuel swipes, but that seems shady along with being a poor use of my free time…
Isn’t the fuel discount capped at 20c/gallon unless its at a Safeway gas station? I know Safeway branded gas stations would be $1/gallon, however there are none near me. The only ones that participate are Chevron.
