Right, escot — the “necessary” tool is something like Hotel Hustle, that compares all the frequent flyer point options, and the best fare.
In general, unless there’s some reason you only have AAdvantage miles and can’t get Avios miles — and everyone reading this blog can probably figure out how to get Avios miles — I don’t know why you’d “bother” redeeming AA miles for short haul flying. AA will never be cheaper, and you have much more onerous advance purchase and cancellation rules. The ONLY reason to use AA over BA mlles is if you have no BA miles.
Be great if the Aramean would wander over next to do a tool for using the Iberia/Avios work around for short-haul rt flights…. (or maybe such a tool already exists?)
