Gas Points Details

Basic Details: Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 35 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 2200 points, you’ll get $2.20 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $2.20. In other areas, there is no max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a completely different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for specific listings of which Shell stations are included.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

I think the $10 off deal is better, but depends on how badly you need gas points I guess. Says limit one per transaction, but you should be able to do multiples if the cashier will ring them up separately. Stop & Shop is cash only for prepaids, but store branded gift cards should work fine with credit card purchase. Make sure you use a credit card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.

DP: I bought two ebay gc (variable load) at two different stores (NJ) with cc. The first time no coupon printed and the customer service gave me $10 cash, which was good except he told me the promotion is “one per person” and I therefore didn’t really feel I should attempt another one.
Today I went to another one, also paid with cc and coupon did print. Despite the language “one per transaction” the coupon itself (which is in the text of the receipt) states, “One per household”. I can confirm that you need to use your Stop and Shop card for the coupon to be applied, so it is most likely being tracked. I was hesitant to try again so came here to read comments if limit of one is enforced – sound like actually I was lucky! Had I read the comments I might not have even tried.:)
I noticed that signs that used to read “cash only for variable load gc” were covered by signs that specified “cash or pin-based debit for visa, mc, amex”.
Perhaps the notion is that tying it to the loyalty card is a type of ID verification? Usually NJ seems to be tougher than, for example, the midwest, so I’m happy with my two at least.

This is great news. I’m hoping that it was just a fluke coding error or something, and that both my store and the CSR that I spoke with were misinformed.

For gift card you can pay only with cash or debit. Maybe when you add grocery they will allow you to pay with credit card?

Nope. It’s cash or debit only no matter what, per what I was told.

A lot of Stop&Shop staff, *including some managers on duty*, at my local store in NYC have refused to sell ANY store gift cards on credit, despite the signs and official policy indicating Amex, MGC, VGC, prepaids and reloadables only. They’re thick-headed too. I’m still working on getting a response from the actual store manger here in as well as corporate, but just something to be aware of. Don’t expect to have this go smoothly.

It’s the only reason I actually shop there, so hopefully I’ll get a response in my favor. Will report back with results.

Well, it looks like the entire issue was caused by my store having out of date signs. According to corporate customer care, effective May 31st ALL gift cards are cash or pin-based debit only, variable load or otherwise. I kindly suggested that having the store update their signs would prevent confusion. Evidently the registers are now hard-coded.

I don’t know if this extends to all Ahold companies (e.g. Giant).

Apparently people on Slickdeals are having the same issue with eBay gift cards, but not necessarily with some other gift cards. It’s possible this new policy only applies to variable load gift cards, or it’s possible that the registers are still being updated.

Data points would be helpful in figuring out what’s going on, but just sharing my experience and research so far.

Waddly, can you share the link to Slickdeals? Can’t seem to find it.

Sorry, since comment subscriptions are unavailable, I didn’t notice your request until now 🙂

There were only a small number of relevant posts in the Stop&Shop coupon thread:

Post that is in line with my experience, re: eBay GCs:
http://slickdeals.net/f/7704781-stop-shop-ct-ma-nh-nj-ny-ri-deals?p=85936319#post85936319

However, other people have reported success paying for other merchant GCs that are not eBay GCs:
http://slickdeals.net/f/7704781-stop-shop-ct-ma-nh-nj-ny-ri-deals?p=85989111#post85989111

When I was at the store, they wouldn’t even try to run the eBay card in the register for credit, but when I called, the store manager tried it when he was on the phone, and the register said cash or debit-only. I wasn’t physically there to witness that, but I don’t think he was lying since corporate confirmed that was the policy as well when I called them.

What I haven’t yet figured out is whether or not this truly applies to all merchant GCs, just eBay GCs, variable GCs, all of those but not all are hardcoded, or none of those and is a big pile of misinformation.

Thanks WP. I’ll have to test it out at my local SS. We need more data points on hard-coded to confirm.

PA giant is 4x gas points too. Sets nicely with 5x purchase either with chase freedom card or BBVA card ( if purchased in next two days)

Giant in most of MD is 4x gas points as well. Someone would have to check the stores in VA and the ones excluded in my particular circular. I’d screenshot the ad, but I’m on mobile at the moment. I’m still laying in supplies of Petco cards at Safeway, but I normally shop Giant.

Also get 5% back by using the Chase Freedom CC, unless they code the g/c purchase differently.
Since my state only has the gas points offer, I will pass on this deal.
