The Offer
- Purchase $150 or more in American Express gift cards at Safeway/Vons/Pavilion’s and get a $15 instant discount with coupon. $150 Amex gift card will cost $141 total after the discount.
- There’s also an offer to get $5 off an Amex Serve card. You can just use the temporary Serve card as an Amex gift card without registering it, but be sure to use it up within the month before the $1 monthly fee hits.
These offers are being found only when you’re logged into your store account online. Â For Vons/Pavilions login to your account and see the “My card/special offer” in the top left. For Safeway, it’s in the Just4You offers.
The Fine Print

- You need to save the digital coupon and apply it at checkout.
- This offer is targeted; it’s not showing for everyone.
Our Verdict
Amex gift cards come with a $5.95 fee and you’ll be able to get the $150 Amex gift card for $140.95. Or you can buy a $500 Amex gift card for $490.95. This could be useful if you have a credit card that earns bonus points at supermarkets. And the $5 off Serve deal can be useful as well.
One nice idea would be to make a Plastiq payment of $147.10 (I hope I got the math right 🙂 ) and you’ll be profiting over $6.15, plus $156 in grocery store spend on the credit card. Or you can pay your utilities fee-free with Plastiq.
Notes:
- Some Safeway stores (and possibly Vons/Pavilion’s) won’t accept credit card payments for Amex gift cards.
- $500 or more will need a managerial override. May be worth checking out in lower amounts or checking out at the Customer Service desk.
