Cash App (Square Cash Debit Card): Cash Boost – Get Cash Back On Categories/Specific Merchants (New Boosts Added)

Update 10/1/19: New boosts added, such as:

  • AMC: $3 off each visit ($5 minimum spend)
  • MTA: $1 off each purchase ($1.5 minimum spend)

Add any others you see in the comments.

Update 9/6/19: Looks like Target 5% off each visit has changed to Target $1 off $1.50. Must wait 1 hour in between redemption.

Update 8/14/19: Looks like the coffee shop visit is locked for some people and they have to make 5 debit card purchases to unlock it. Hat tip to reader Jon S. Some new boosts as well:

  • Safeway: 5% off each visit. Max discount $7.50
  • Target: 5% off each visit. Max discount $7.50
  • Burger King: $1 off, $1.5 minimum spend
  • Airbnb: 5% off ($20 max)
  • Jamba Juice: 10% off
  • Panda Express: 10% off

8/9/19: New boosts added, 5% at CVS with a $7.50 max and 10% at Dollar Tree with a $7.5 max. (ht Michael)

7/12/19: New boosts added, $3 off AMC and 10% off Dairy Queen ($7.50 maximum discount). Hat tip to DDG

Update 6/7/19: New boost has been added: 15% on Doordash (ht reader A.) Seems that some people are getting different amounts, like 10% back or 20% back.

Update 3/14/19: New boosts have been added including:

  • Trader Joe’s 10% back
  • In-N-Out
  • Del Taco
  • Buffalo Wild Wings
  • Kroger: 10% back ($7.5 max)
  • Five Guys: 10% back ($7.5 max)
  • Dominos: $2 off ($3 minimum spend)

Keep in mind it seems like these deals are localized, so you won’t necessarily see the same offers.

Update 8/31/18: Reader Max tells us they’ve updated the list, including bumping Whole Foods from 5% to 10% and more additions and changes.

The Offer

  • The Square Cash Debit Card is now offering all customers something called ‘Cash Boost’. Basically you choose one place or category to earn cash back in. Some examples:
    • $1 off at coffee shops ($1.5 minimum spend)
    • $1 off at Subway ($1.5 minimum spend)
    • 5% off at Whole Foods
    • 10% off at Chick-fil-A
    • 15% off at Chipotle
    • 10% off at Panera
    • 15% off at Shake Shack
  • You can change your boost once every 24 hours and you can use it once every 2 hours

Our Verdict

They tested a similar feature on a small subset of users, offering $1.5 back at coffee shops. $1 back at coffee shops is still great though, especially since those transactions are usually small and frequent (e.g daily cup) rather than one large purchase less often. Quite sad that this debit card has a better rewards program than the Chase Starbucks card. You should also still be able to get a $10 bonus for sending money via Square cash the first time.

10% off at Whole Foods would be a deal, but not 5%. I agree that the $1 off at Coffee Shops looks like the best.

Jeremy

Apparently they heard me.

Jeremy

Although they lowered the Whole Foods limit to $75.

For whole foods you need like 40%

Nor really, I buy organic products most of the time and Whole Foods is actually cheaper for most products with Amazon Prime membership. Often Amazon have $15/$25 off for Amex/Chase/Discover points checkout and I buy Whole Foods GCs in that. Have been running my grocery needs past 2 quarters with those.

If you are smart in Whole Foods you don’t pay stupid prices and the times you pay a lot, the quality difference is well worth it

Hari
Hari

I second that. Some of the Wholefoods price are crazy expensive but found few that stands out with the best quality for price. Buying loose mushrooms etc where I can take enough for the week makes it well worth for me than to save cost at Costco and wasting half of that as I dont have a big family.

Anyone can get a square cash debit card now? Mustve missed the boat on that. Need to order one

Ryan Goldstein

Per the program details (e.g. https://cash.me/rewards/shakeshack ), you can swap your selected boost every 24 hours and can use it once every 2 hours. Additionally, “Cash App balance must exceed full purchase amount”.

Jeremy
Jeremy

Wait, do you not need to choose? Do you get this deal at all of the places?

JV

You chose one of the boosts. You do not get all of them simultaneously.

How do you enable this in the app. I’ve looked all over and can’t find anything. Thanks!

Update the app, click on cash card and you’ll see the boost at the bottom

Michael

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps this is still targeted like the coffee shop only one was. I did that and no boost option is there.

On Android I’m running the latest version of the app and I do not see it.

At the top I’m the middle were you may have a balance between the clock and profile/menu click on balance.

The boost options were on this page for me.

I wonder if you can add the Square debit as payment in Chick-fil app they have have been sending out lots of free food since I saw the rewards program here here on DOC.

Phill
Phill

When you open the app on android (green screen with $ in the middle) look to the top right where there is a clock….click on it and you should be prompted to apply for the debit card. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I’ve had the debit card for a long time now, at least 1-2 years. I don’t see the boost button anywhere, even though William mentioned it should be rolled out to 100% of users.

I don’t see it anywhere either. I got my card 2 weeks ago.

Proctologist Of Credit

Update: It showed up a few days ago. Looks like it took a while to truly roll out to everyone.

If you go to the screen that displays your cash card there’s a boost option right below that.

Is this an Apple vs Android thing? I have the latest App.

I used the Kroger discount and it worked, went to chick filet and it worked. A few days later went back to Kroger and Kroger was not in my boost options.

You’ll only see the Boost option if you have both the latest version of the Cash app AND an active Cash debit card. Anyone can sign up for the Cash debit card for free with no credit check, so if you haven’t done that yet, that’s your next step.

$15% off Chipotle sounds good.

is there a minimum purchase amount for coffee? and what qualifies as a coffee shop?

Is it going to be soft pull or hard pull applying for this card?

Phill

No pull. It’s a debit card.

Taylor

I think 1.50 is the minimum.

Ryan Goldstein

Since your Cash App balance must exceed the full purchase amount, does anyone know how long it takes to add cash? Is it instant?

Edward P

It’s instant.

it’s worth noting that you can add the debit card to Apple Pay (and I assume Google/Samsung Pay).

Any data points on if reloading your balance in the Chick-fil-A one app will trigger the 10% Chick-fil-A discount? (CFA One reloads always code as a Chick-fil-A restaurant purchase if done with a credit card so I would think it probably should.)

Mark W
Mark W

In the spirit of “Be the DP you wish to see…” Yes, can confirm that using your Cash card to reload your Chick-fil-A One app balance or make a purchase through the Chick-fil-A One app DOES trigger the 10% cash boost.

sw2tched

Can can confirm this worked for me as well. Used Cash Visa debit card in the CFA One app on a $10 gift card reload for $9

Have used the Boost twice now, once at Subway and one at Chipotle. So far it works exactly as advertised. Some of the info here about adding and changing the Boost on the Cash App is not very clear, so here is the explanation from the Square Cash App for anyone still looking.

1.Open Cash App.
2 Tap the dollar amount at the top of the home screen. ( When you open the Cash App there will be the amount of cash you have , tap on this amount to get to the next screen )
3.Tap the Boost icon below your Cash Card.
4.Scroll through the available Boosts.
5.Drag your favorite Boost onto your Cash Card.

Saver! Finally found where the boost icon is! I was looking in wrong places ! The key is:
2 Tap the dollar amount at the top of the home screen. ( When you open the Cash App there will be the amount of cash you have , tap on this amount to get to the next screen )

Lin

Does it work with Starbucks reload balance .. ?
Still want to gather more stars .. :p

CA
CA

No. The stopped the reload by app from working last week. No sure about reloading in-store.

Reloading in store triggers the boost 😉

The coffee shop boost is so frustrating, they don’t even consider “cafe” as “an establishment that mostly sells coffee and coffee drinks”

Dan
Dan

I’ve found this to be very useful, especially the $1 off coffee purchases of $1.50 or more. Another change was they reduced Chipotle to 10%. Now my offers are the following: coffee offer and 10% back at the following merchants: chick fil a, dominoes, wendys, panda express, dairy queen, chipotle, whole foods, shake shack

Chris
Chris

Chipotle still 15% for me in NY, guess it varies by region.

Ben
Ben

If you replace that boost with another boost, it’ll drop down to 10%. Now everything is 10% across and Subway is removed.

Chris
Chris

Damn, should buy a large gift card instore from Chipotle then before swapping boosts, that still works right?

Dan
Dan

That should work. it works at chick fil a, even works for loading the chick fil a app. its a good way to lock in the savings without having to change each time. I was holding out on the chipotle for when they had a buy $25 in gift cards, get $5/free burrito promotion. was really gonna load up then. that’s still my plan even with 10% off, but savings obviously wont be as good. i think those promotions come up closer to the holidays

Peter
Peter

All the coffee shops I go to are coded as “restaurants” or “specialty food stores” on my other credit cards. How do they know what’s a coffee shop? Is there a coffee shop category?

Nicole
Nicole

honestly, they don’t. the large chains always work, but local places almost never do. if you go into the app and contest, they sometimes provide the $1 after the fact.

Abe
Abe

All merchants are now 10% except coffee is $1

Z

Hey so your article above says once every 2 hours, but the program details on the app says once every hour. Just pointing it out, also where does it say change boost once every 24 hours? I can’t find that wording anywhere. Thanks!

Asdf
Asdf

Also can’t find these terms anywhere. It looks like the boost can be swapped at any time. Anyone have a link?

Trevor
Trevor

It was changed to every 30 minutes.
