Barclays GM Business Card: 100,000 Point Bonus

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Barclays GM Business card is offering 100,000 points after $5,000 in spend within 5 months.

Card Details

  • No annual fee
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 7x points on GM purchases
    • 3x points on all other purchases
  • 0% introductory APR for 9 months on GM purchases more than $499 (within 30 days of account opening)

Our Verdict

Points are worth 1¢ each towards a vehicle and discount applies after negotiation, you’d also get the 9 month interest free period. Card earns 3x on all purchases as well, not as good as the previous 4x card. I don’t think this is as good as other cards that earn at a high rate as you’re locked into GM. But sign up bonus might be worth considering if you’re sure you’re going to go for a GM car. We will add this to our list of the best business credit cards

Does anybody know if Barclays give a temp number to spend upon approval? In the process of getting a GM lease, so a temp number would come really handy.

I was able to add the card to my Apple Pay as soon as I was approved (without the physical card in hand), but I didn’t see a temp number available.

From the T&C. IMHO, these details should (always) be included on the deal summary section:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT POINTS

  • As long as your Card Account is open and in Good Standing, there is no limit to the total Points you can earn using your Card Account.
  • You may not earn Points through the use of your Card Account during any period in which your Card Account is past due.
  • Points expire if you do not earn or redeem Points for a period of seven years.
  • If you do not receive Points earned for eligible Net Purchases made with your Card Account, please contact customer service using the number on the back of your Card.
  • You have no property rights or other legal interest in Points. Points earned through the use of your Card Account and not yet reflected on your Card Account, have no cash value or value of any kind.
  • The monetary value of a transaction for which you redeem your Points may be considered taxable income from GM in the tax year in which you redeem the Points under U.S. tax law. GM may be required to send you (and file with the IRS) a Form 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income) for the year in which you redeem Points when the value of the redemption plus other taxable miscellaneous income you receive from GM totals $600 or more for a calendar year. You are responsible for any tax liability related to Points earned.
  • The sale or barter of any Points, other than as authorized in writing by Barclays or GM, is expressly prohibited.
  • You can view a summary of your Points earned through the use of your Card Account during the billing cycle on your monthly Card Account statement or by logging in to BarclaysUS.com.
  • Barclays is not responsible for arranging or providing for any goods or services related to the use of Points, for any delay, failure, or refusal by GM to redeem Points, or for any decision by GM to revoke or cancel Points.

As this is an effective 3% rebate on spend, a good CPA should be able to offset that 1099-MISC you get for redeeming your points.

Will have to wait and see if Barclays can correct all the problems that Goldman created in the GM rewards space. Somehow they automatically converted me to two accounts, and my points never go into either one. Goldman has been a nightmare. Barclays is a welcome change.

Please keep a log if you try! 👏🥂

Hell, considering the points don’t expire, I’m tempted myself (especially since I’d NEVER actually buy one).

Can the points from a bus GM card be combined with points from a personal one, and can multiple businesses get multiple cards and then combine the points?

“When redeeming Points toward the retail purchase or lease of a new GM vehicle, you may use Points from only one GM Business Card Account for each vehicle. No combining or pooling is allowed.”

Points are quite valuable if you’re in the GM family. I bought a new Chevy two years ago and I’ve only used points to make the payments. I have only $8,000 left to go on my GM financed payments after two years. Of course I MS a lot on this card to do this.
It was easier at 4% back, and when Simon Mall sold gift cards. But at 3% and no Simon, I’ll be paying the last 8k out of pocket. Just not worth the effort anymore.

Of course even with MS, it wasn’t free but it did provide about a 75% discount after paying GC and money order fees.

These points can be used for new tires at a GM shop too. They price match tires but not mounting and balancing. Or for oil changes.

I’ve been using the personal GM Rewards Credit Card for 2 years now. I’ve been redeeming the points towards my GM Financial loan. I thought this business credit card would be an amazing addition to my account (an extra $1000 that I can redeem towards my loan). However, when I read the terms of this business card, this is what it says:

“GM Business Card Points are not GM Rewards Program points and are not eligible for redemption through the GM Rewards Program. Points may only be earned and redeemed at GM dealers in the fifty United States and Washington, D.C. Points are not earned on discounts, rebates, credits, shipping fees, state inspection fees, warranty repair work or body shop repair orders. Visit the Reward Rules within the Terms and Conditions to view the GM Business™ World Elite Mastercard® Reward Rules.”

Does this mean I can’t redeem these “business points” towards my GM Financial loan like I do with the personal card?

I think you might be able to. Just ask.

From what I can tell, Barclay is just trying to keep its program separate from the old GS program. (No points added to the old rewards account.)

From T&C:

GM manages Points redemption. You may redeem Points In-Dealership for the following: new vehicles, service, parts, accessories, protection plans and certified used GM vehicles. When redeeming Points toward the retail purchase or lease of a new GM vehicle, you may use Points from only one GM Business Card Account for each vehicle. No combining or pooling is allowed. GM is not responsible, and bears no liability, for disagreements between participants concerning use of Points. You can obtain information regarding the redemption options available by calling 844-764-2665 or online at GMCard.com.

Plan on buying a GM truck late next year. Do the points expire ? Any DPs ?

From what I can tell no. The only catch is here, which is extremely lenient:

  • Points expire if you do not earn or redeem Points for a period of seven years.

If you can’t earn any points in seven years, then you’re probably dead.

you can also use the points towards a lease if it’s through GM financial. You can also make some downpayment or onepay for a lease. For example, I paid 3850 for a blazer ev rs 24/10k months (loaner, multiple incentives).
I paid for it with the GM card, so i got about another 7x back. I have 2 leases, so those points will be used to pay for the monthly lease

Really good DP. The terms make it seem applying towards a current lease isn’t possible. Is it as straightforward as it sounds in your case? Applying points via GM Financial?

@Chuck Idk when you pasted this screenshot, but they changed the 0% APR on car purchases to be 6 months instead of the 9 months we see up top.

It’s 9 months for GM purchases within the first 30 days. Then 6 months after that
