Points.com (a rewards program aggregator and trading platform) today announced that they would be acquiring PointsHound (hotel search engine that rewards it’s users with hotel and airline points). If you follow other blogs in the miles & points space you’ll be familiar with PointsHound and their competitor, RocketMiles (Update: Kaligo is another website in this space). This is because they are constantly being talked about, the main reason for this is that the bloggers receive an affiliate commission (in the form of credit onto their account) whenever somebody signs up and uses the service.
The problem with these services is that they are always more expensive than other hotel booking search engines and the hotel’s own website. You might be getting 500 or even 3,000 airline miles for every booking you’re doing, but when the room is costing you an extra $50 a night the bonus points are quickly outweighed.
It’s an interesting acquisition by Points.com and we hope they can improve the service so it’s more competitive with other hotel booking sites.
