Companion Fare Details

This card currently has a limited time offer. Where you get a free companion fare (you just pay taxes and fees). To receive this free companion fare you must spend $1,000 within the first 90 days of account opening (this is also required for the 30,000 miles & $100 bonus).

From year two onwards you also receive a companion fare, but you must pay $99 and taxes and fees. There are some rules to keep in mind for the companion ticket:

  • Can be used towards one round-trip coach fare on Alaska Airlines or Virgin America
  • Must purchase a paid (e.g no award tickets allowed) published coach airfare on the same itinerary booked at the same time

Our Verdict

The previous offer was already one of the best credit card sign up bonuses and it’s only gotten better with this addition. Bank of America has matched bonuses in the past, so if you’ve recently applied and want this new free companion ticket it’s worth asking (most people haven’t had luck getting this particular bonus matched). Before applying for this or any other Bank of America card, I’d recommend reading this post detailing everything you should know about their credit cards. They have also be limiting some people to a maximum of four cards recently.

How do you ensure you get the visa signature version rather than just the visa platinum one?

If you’re approved, the name of the card will show in the congratulations page. Your credit limit is also an indication (at least $5000 for Signature). The rep told me they couldn’t cancel the application after it was approved but I guess you can just cancel the card if you want to.

You’re applying for the Visa Signature card specifically though, right? My app went to “pending” and then was approved. I’ll be upset if it doesn’t come with the offer stated in the ad.

There is no application for Platinum version. They just downgrade you if your creditworthy is not enough. I actually prefer them just decline me instead of doing that.

What’s your approved credit limit? If it’s Visa Signature, congrats.

Idk it hasn’t shown up on my BOA account. It initially went to pending so I went to the status page and checked and it was approved. No other details

Just called this number 800-445-5464 and it said I was approved for $16k…Signature card for sure?

I can’t reply deeper than this to answer you. With that high limit, it must be Signature.

You are but BOA is shady in this area as they will give you Platinum Plus or Signature depending on CL approved for 5K to get Signature.

My apps today
1st BOA Alaskan- Pending – Later Approved
2nd BOA Travel Rewards – Pending – Later Approved

Called got both the above approved but the Alaskan with only a 2k credit line.

So I submitted another BOA Alaskan App – Went Pending

Called in and talked to Credit Analyst and denied for 16 EX inquiries in last year

Debating between HUCA and applying for the Amtrak card to salvage the day.

I still see the message: “Get another Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare™ from $121 ($99 plus taxes and fees from $22) every year on your account anniversary valid on Alaska and Virgin America flights booked on There are no blackout dates.”

Not able to find free annual companion fare with $100 statement credit offer

What was the difference in the offer? Didn’t they always offer a companion pass?

They were $99 for companion fare, now it’s FREE if you use ticket in your first year.

Does the biz card also get a companion fare or only personal?

yes it does but no $100 statement credit

When you make the dummy booking, make sure you aren’t already logged in to your Alaska account or the offer won’t appear (or at least it wouldn’t for me).

Just to be clear you pay $75 AF and $99 and taxes and fees for second year onwards.
In addition you have to buy your ticket and cannot use points.

each ticket to Hawaii cost 1000-1300 dollars. That is how much you can save with this for one trip. Yes you have to pay for one ticket.

Thanks @Irshad
So if three people are travelling then I can buy one ticket with cash and get the free companion pass for the second and buy the third one with points.
Are 30,000 points worth at least one ticket to Hawaii ?
Will it work?

Alaska miles are usually rated to be worth 1.6 – 1.8 cents per point. You might need more points to get the third ticket

Tickets to Hawaii start at 17,500 one way.

So, my 30,000 points are not even worth one round-trip ticket to Hawaii 🙁
Looks like this is the worst decision I made applying for a CC.
Any other use of these points?

Is BOA known to waive the AF in general first year if you ask

BOA will not honor this offer for me. I applied on 4/2/17 and they would not match offer for $100 statement credit a few weeks ago and when I called again just now, they will not match this offer. I enquired about if they match at all at BOA anymore and both times the CSRs seemed unaware of ever matching promotions outside of what was signed up for.

Still wondering whether it’s worth for me at east coast…

i live in DTW and have looked at award travel options from ORD, IAD and NYC and although I usually find something or the other, they are always 3-4 stops (for international travel) since the routing will force you to go through an alaska hub like SEA or PDX. This obviously doesn’t make sense if you’re traveling east but if you travel westward this might be useful since availability seems to be better than others. Also, you can book Cathay award flights over the phone.

Excellent service from DC area.

Where does it state the card earns extra miles on Mileage Plan Dining?

I was looking at getting this card and noticed the same thing. I found the following in the terms & conditions on the sign up page:
Your card will be automatically enrolled in the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Dining Rewards program by Rewards Network and a Welcome Kit will be sent to you explaining your restaurant dining earning opportunities. Bonus Miles: Earn up to 5 miles (consisting of 4 bonus miles and 1 base mile) per qualifying $1 spent on Net Purchases at select restaurants. For a complete list of participating restaurants, visit Miles earned through the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Dining Rewards program will be posted to your Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan account.

It’s not entirely clear to me if you just get the 1 mile per $1 on the card and the 4 bonus are the points rewarded via mileage plan dining. The fact that is says ‘up to’ suggests to me the bonus is via mileage plan dining as there are 3 tiers; however the tiers are 1mile/$2, 3miles/$1 or 5miles/$1 so 4miles/$1 bonus doesn’t align with those either.

If you actually get 5miles/$1 + mileage plan dining of 5miles/$1 then this is a great rate for dining. However if it’s actually 1/$1 + 5/$1 max then you’re far better off adding a card like Chase Sapphire Reserve and get 3UR/$1 + 5miles/$1.

Don’t know if anyone has experience with this card and can answer which is it for sure?

Is this also a anniversary companion fare or can I use it this year?

Found the answer in the post.

Applied and approved instantly. Last time I applied for an AS card was rejected for already having one open – which I still do – so it’s nice to know I can have more than one.

I currently have 2 BOA personal Alaska cards and one Alaska business card. I would like to cancel one personal card prior to taking advantage of this offer. How much time should I wait after canceling one of my personal Alaska cards? Is anyone else in a similar position?

Had one personal (10/3/16) and one business (1/17/17) card. Canceled my personal on 4/10/17. Had not read the new churning rules and did not lower my CL on the personal. However last week I did lower the business CL to $1k.

Applied a couple of days ago for a new personal card and got the “pending” language. Checked the website the next day and found I was approved, I did not call in.

Thinking of canceling my business card soon, waiting a month, and applying again for that card.

Awesome DP! I lowered my credit limit yesterday, so I’ll most likely cancel the personal card I opened in September and reapply in early July.

Thanks for your help!

Just a reminder that if you get a ‘pending’ instead of an instant decision, you can call 866-224-7803 to have a credit analyst give you a decision over the phone. In my case, they were able to reduce the limit on one of my other BoA cards in order to open the Alaska.

Weird DP: Applied this weekend and was denied. Have two BOA cards currently and none within the last 90 days. One of the cards was a BOA Alaska card. I called recon and spoke to them about the denial and was told I have a sufficient number of cards at this time. Went with some nice back and forth but ultimately they didn’t budge. Weird given I have never had a total of 4 BOA cards and I try to keep my limits lower with them.

Not sure it makes a difference but do you have any other relationship with BofA?
