Companion Fare Details

This card currently has a limited time offer (until July 10th). Where you get a free companion fare (you just pay taxes and fees). To receive this free companion fare you must spend $1,000 within the first 90 days of account opening (this is also required for the 30,000 miles & $100 bonus).

From year two onwards you also receive a companion fare, but you must pay $99 and taxes and fees. There are some rules to keep in mind for the companion ticket:

  • Can be used towards one round-trip coach fare on Alaska Airlines or Virgin America
  • Must purchase a paid (e.g no award tickets allowed) published coach airfare on the same itinerary booked at the same time
  • Must be booked on alaskaair.com
  • Code is automatically applied to the primary cardholders Alaska Airlines My account profile

Our Verdict

The previous offer was already one of the best credit card sign up bonuses and it’s only gotten better with this addition. Bank of America has matched bonuses in the past, so if you’ve recently applied and want this new free companion ticket it’s worth asking (most people haven’t had luck getting this particular bonus matched). Before applying for this or any other Bank of America card, I’d recommend reading this post detailing everything you should know about their credit cards. They have also be limiting some people to a maximum of four cards recently.

How do you ensure you get the visa signature version rather than just the visa platinum one?

    • TanT says:

If you’re approved, the name of the card will show in the congratulations page. Your credit limit is also an indication (at least $5000 for Signature). The rep told me they couldn’t cancel the application after it was approved but I guess you can just cancel the card if you want to.

      • Jon says:

You’re applying for the Visa Signature card specifically though, right? My app went to “pending” and then was approved. I’ll be upset if it doesn’t come with the offer stated in the ad.

        • TanT says:

There is no application for Platinum version. They just downgrade you if your creditworthy is not enough. I actually prefer them just decline me instead of doing that.

What’s your approved credit limit? If it’s Visa Signature, congrats.

          • Jon says:

Idk it hasn’t shown up on my BOA account. It initially went to pending so I went to the status page and checked and it was approved. No other details

          • Jon says:

Just called this number 800-445-5464 and it said I was approved for $16k…Signature card for sure?

          • TanT says:

I can’t reply deeper than this to answer you. With that high limit, it must be Signature.

        • Chris says:

You are but BOA is shady in this area as they will give you Platinum Plus or Signature depending on CL approved for 5K to get Signature.

          My apps today
1st BOA Alaskan- Pending – Later Approved
2nd BOA Travel Rewards – Pending – Later Approved

Called got both the above approved but the Alaskan with only a 2k credit line.

So I submitted another BOA Alaskan App – Went Pending

Called in and talked to Credit Analyst and denied for 16 EX inquiries in last year

Debating between HUCA and applying for the Amtrak card to salvage the day.

  2. Div says:

I still see the message: “Get another Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare™ from $121 ($99 plus taxes and fees from $22) every year on your account anniversary valid on Alaska and Virgin America flights booked on alaskaair.com. There are no blackout dates.”

Not able to find free annual companion fare with $100 statement credit offer

  3. John says:

What was the difference in the offer? Didn’t they always offer a companion pass?

  4. flyz says:

When you make the dummy booking, make sure you aren’t already logged in to your Alaska account or the offer won’t appear (or at least it wouldn’t for me).

  5. MarcoPolo says:

Just to be clear you pay $75 AF and $99 and taxes and fees for second year onwards.
In addition you have to buy your ticket and cannot use points.
    Correct?

  6. David says:

Is BOA known to waive the AF in general first year if you ask

  7. Nick says:

BOA will not honor this offer for me. I applied on 4/2/17 and they would not match offer for $100 statement credit a few weeks ago and when I called again just now, they will not match this offer. I enquired about if they match at all at BOA anymore and both times the CSRs seemed unaware of ever matching promotions outside of what was signed up for.

  8. Mark says:

Still wondering whether it’s worth for me at east coast…

    • Dee says:

i live in DTW and have looked at award travel options from ORD, IAD and NYC and although I usually find something or the other, they are always 3-4 stops (for international travel) since the routing will force you to go through an alaska hub like SEA or PDX. This obviously doesn’t make sense if you’re traveling east but if you travel westward this might be useful since availability seems to be better than others. Also, you can book Cathay award flights over the phone.

      • tassojunior says:

        Excellent service from DC area.

Nonstop BWI to LAX, San Diego, Seattle and Portland

Nonstop DCA to LAX, Seattle, Dallas, and Portland

        Nonstop IAD to Seattle

  9. MattLaw says:

Where does it state the card earns extra miles on Mileage Plan Dining?

  10. Debbie says:

Is this also a anniversary companion fare or can I use it this year?

  11. Victoria King says:

I currently have 2 BOA personal Alaska cards and one Alaska business card. I would like to cancel one personal card prior to taking advantage of this offer. How much time should I wait after canceling one of my personal Alaska cards? Is anyone else in a similar position?

    • Don’t think there is a hard time frame, Bofa have been more strict on multiples recently though.

    • Jeff G says:

Had one personal (10/3/16) and one business (1/17/17) card. Canceled my personal on 4/10/17. Had not read the new churning rules and did not lower my CL on the personal. However last week I did lower the business CL to $1k.

Applied a couple of days ago for a new personal card and got the “pending” language. Checked the website the next day and found I was approved, I did not call in.

Thinking of canceling my business card soon, waiting a month, and applying again for that card.

      • Victoria King says:

Awesome DP! I lowered my credit limit yesterday, so I’ll most likely cancel the personal card I opened in September and reapply in early July.

        Thanks for your help!

  12. Richard says:

Just a reminder that if you get a ‘pending’ instead of an instant decision, you can call 866-224-7803 to have a credit analyst give you a decision over the phone. In my case, they were able to reduce the limit on one of my other BoA cards in order to open the Alaska.

  13. Chris says:

Weird DP: Applied this weekend and was denied. Have two BOA cards currently and none within the last 90 days. One of the cards was a BOA Alaska card. I called recon and spoke to them about the denial and was told I have a sufficient number of cards at this time. Went with some nice back and forth but ultimately they didn’t budge. Weird given I have never had a total of 4 BOA cards and I try to keep my limits lower with them.

  14. MrBig says:

Is there any similar deal for the business version of the card?

  15. iva says:

same experience as Chris mentioned above. Denial since already had existing bofa alaska card. FYI for future applicants.

  16. Gregg says:

I applied yesterday and it went to pending, so this morning I called 866-224-7803 and talked to a credit analyst. She told me that it was flagged as a “Duplicate application” because I’d gotten another BofA card less than three months ago. It was actually on January 25, more than three months ago, so if you’re hoping to churn these it may be good to wait four months just to be safe. She eventually approved me for a 15k limit so all good – one of the simpler recon calls I’ve ever had.

  17. bob says:

Applied for this card a couple weeks ago and was instantly approved.

Called BofA to try and get them to match this offer. I believe the only difference was $0 companion fare vs. my $99 one. They said they could not match it because this promo began May 1st and I applied in April. I may try again.

  18. FlySimply says:

I have a targeted offer for 35,000 miles after / $1,000 spend without $100 credit. Do you thing that’s a better value, considering I do not have any travel plans.

  19. EB says:

Applied went into pending, called 8662247803. They asked me for my others CC info, and after that they approved me for a 12k Cl.

  20. Allen says:

Has anyone had any luck getting the bonus matched on this deal? I applied about 6-8 weeks ago, tried calling in tonight and was told no, “you get what you apply for”

  21. Calvin says:

Um.. find a link for referring from airline employee(?)

  22. HH says:

So to qualify for the free companion fare you have to apply by 7/10/17?

  23. HH says:

So do you have to apply by 7/10/17 to qualify for the free companion fare?

  24. MarcoPolo says:

I am planning a trip to Hawaii and it costs 80,000 points.
What is the best DoC way to get those points?
    TIA

  25. mykidsmom says:

I got the card about 6 months ago but canceled before minimum spend an earning the bonus. Can I reapply for a new card and get the bonus?

  26. lorem ipsum says:

Forgot to mention that the signup is at alaskavisanow.com. There is a code on the invite, which leads to an application with your name and address prepopulated. It does look like you can erase those fields and input your own info, but my guess is the app won’t be successful if you change the name and address. You can, however, call to apply.

The landing page at alaskavisanow.com says, “If you need help in providing your Personal Secure Code or are not the person to whom this credit card offer was mailed, please call 1.888.924.7343 for assistance.”

    • lorem ipsum says:

Just took another look at the T&C. This targeted offer is far inferior to what’s publicly available now. No $100 statement credit, and the companion ticket is $99. (DoC, feel free to take down all three of my posts here.)

  27. Mark says:

I applied and finished the spend. However no bonus and no $100 statement credit.

  28. Jay says:

I’m approved for the platinum version.. what should I do? Will this card be posted onmy credit reports if I cancel it as soon as I receive the card?

  29. Jay says:

I’m approved for the platinum version. What should I do now? Is the reconsideration working for BoA? Will this card be posted on my credit reports if I cancel it right away?

  30. Josiah says:

How much money in US Dollars is 30,000 Alaska airline miles worth?

  31. Michael says:

I hate the deceptive practice of the downgraded approval.

If I wanted the Platinum Visa, I would have applied for it.. Or wouldn’t have applied for it in this case.

They put me to pending, later approved, and the bonus offer I was “given” per the included flyer is “Receive 10,000 bonus miles plus $50 flight discount code”

Terrible offer.. Not worth the HP, Min Spend, the Annual Fee, or becoming ineligible for the higher bonus for a year..

Not an issue w/ my credit, it must be due to recent apps. But banks that do this are the worst, I’m talking to you US Bank, and BOA..

  32. Jan B says:

    Please help.

I cannot qualify for an AA travel rewards CC for still quite some time (Citi 24 rule).

I could sure use AA miles as some of my travel is greatly enhanced by leaving from a smaller city airport nearby that has very few airlines to choose from. (Nice facility, easy to get to, too, but I digress).

According to AS website, AA is still a partner. Question: If I receive this AS card, can I use the miles on AA? I know it seems elementary, but want to make sure. Thank you.

  33. Jan B says:

OK, sorry, I found a great AS page that gave me answer.

WC, please delete my last two posts unless the prior one could serve by way of education. ALTHOUGH, LOL, probably everybody else here knew the answer already. Thanks, have a great day.

  34. Super says:

    DP:
Wife applied for a Merill+ over the phone and was approved after recon today.
She was declined after applying for the Alaska card today even after a 2nd HUCA recon call, with BoA citing “the number of accounts is sufficient”….this would be her third account

She offered to move credit around, but she was still declined.

BoA might be tightening up even more than 4 accounts being the max now

    Beware.

  35. Avi says:

Got notification from Experian as soon as I submit the application. 4th card with BoA

PS: Enjoying DoC articles and reviews. Thanks to all contributors

  36. Samwise says:

If I get the companion fare code on the anniversary before paying the annual fee, do I get to keep the code if I cancel the card and don’t pay?

  37. Jon says:

I think I applied with this $100 statement credit link, but is there any way to confirm I did? (I called BOA and they weren’t aware of a $100 statement credit on the sign up bonus)
