American Airlines: 20-30% Transfer Bonus When You Transfer SPG Points

• American Airlines is offering a bonus of up 30% when you transfer SPG points to American Airline miles, broken down as follows:
  • Earn 20% bonus with each conversion
  • Earn an additional 10,000 AAdvantage® miles for every 100,000 AAdvantage® miles received from conversions
• As always, for every 20,000 Starpoints® transferred within the same transaction, SPG® will automatically add another 5,000 Starpoints®. The 20% bonus will apply after this addition.

The Fine Print

• Promotional period: September 1, 2017 at 12:01 a.m. Central Time through October 15, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time October 31st, 2017
• During the Program Period, American Airlines AAdvantage® and Starwood Preferred Guest® program members (each, a “Member”) that convert Starpoints® to AAdvantage® miles will earn 20% additional AAdvantage® miles on each conversion (“Conversion(s)”).
• For every 100,000 AAdvantage® miles a Member receives from Conversions during the Program Period, the Member will receive an additional 10,000 AAdvantage® miles.
• or every 20,000 Starpoints® converted to AAdvantage® miles within the same Conversion, SPG® will automatically add another 5,000 AAdvantage® miles. The 20% bonus referenced in #1 above will apply after this addition. Thus, converting 20,000 Starpoints® in a single Conversion would result in the Member receiving 30,000 AAdvantage® miles.

Our Verdict

If you transfer 20,000 SPG points you’d receive a total of 30,000 American Airline miles. Keep in mind you can’t transfer more than 79,999 SPG points in a single 24 period so you’d need to make two transfers to hit the 100,000 threshold for the 10,000 bonus miles. You’d get the best “value” out of this promotion by transferring a total of 80,000 SPG points this would get you a total of 130,000 American Airline miles (four sets of 5,000 mile bonuses, plus the 20% transfer bonus, plus 10,000 bonus miles). You’d probably get better value out of doing a Marriott Hotel + Air Package though as 90,000 SPG points is enough for 120,000 American Airline miles and a seven night stay at a category 1-5 property.
