This is a fantastic value. Train travel is a great way to see Japan, yes. But, there are instances when flying is much more efficient, and can help one make good use of a train pass. Spend a week taking the train south, ending in Kumamoto? Fly back to Tokyo. Okinawa? Gotta fly. Also great for day trips to Tokyo. Also, you can upgrade to “Class J” on many domestic JAL flights for under $20.

UA has great availability on ANA for domestic rewards, for 5K one way, no taxes/fees. Avios are also a good use, with flights going from 4500-7500 Avios one way.
