American Airlines has announced that effective immediately they will no longer charge the $75 close in booking fee when award tickets are booked within 21 days of departure (the fee is also removed for those upgrading within that time period). United recently replaced the cash close in award booking fee they charge with a miles charge instead. I suspect American Airlines will basically be doing the same thing in the future as American Airlines uses dynamic pricing.
This is hilarious because good luck finding a last minute Saver Award on AA metal with the new dynamic pricing in effect. Miles now simply match the price of the ticket, at about 0.5% exchange or so–and last minute tickets are rarely a bargain. I guess AA figures if you’re willing to throw your miles away why stand in the way. Go hunt, you’ll see what I mean. The partner airlines will catch on soon enough I’m sure. AA miles are becoming as devalued as Delta yay.
After I paid $75 this last New Years for a flight back home lol. Glad to here it though, I usually see cheap mileage rates, usually 10K RT, to go visit the parents within the 21 days so my bank account will be happy.
Wonderful news, I paid that $75 more times than I care to admit. But I’ve got a sneaky feeling they’ll get it back in miles.
I like it.
Yay! This would have saved me $300 at least in 2019!
The first positive move by AA in about 20 years.. here’s hoping it will be the start of a string of more. Not surprised… they really need a huge turnaround as they are currently scraping the bottom of the ratings alongside Spirit.
Those close-in booking fees add up. Hopefully they do not add a mileage fee like United.
If only I had access to my AAdvantage account :'( Freaking Toby
Screw AA. Consistently one of the worst airlines in every way possible. And yes i am still butt hurt about them taking away miles to many of us churners. I wont fly them on principle!
Yes, I’m sure they miss your business.
Like this change!
I love this! That is why I would have British Airways miles for when I could use them to avoid the fee.
