American Express have been running a pilot program since late 2014 where some targeted cardholders were able to get their Experian FICO score for free. It seems that today a lot of new cardholders have been targeted for this free score (in fact all cardholders may have access to this benefit). Update: Not all cardholders will have this benefit yet, but it looks like a significant amount of cardholders now do have it.
How To Find Your Free Score
Here is how to check to see if you have this new benefit on your account:
- On the right hand side underneath “Your Last Login” you will see a link that says “See FICO® Credit Score” with an orange NEW next to it click this.
- Read the terms and conditions and accept them if you wish to proceed
- View your FICO score, it should also list two reasons that are negatively impacting your score (e.g too many new accounts, credit utilization too high)
Why This Is Significant
There are a lot of card issuers that provide free FICO scores, which is fantastic but unfortunately all of the other card issuers provide you with your Equifax or TransUnion scores. Chase also provides an Experian FICO score for free, but only to Chase Slate cardholders.
Having American Express provide a free Experian score means you can have all three nationwide consumer reporting agencies covered for free. This move by American Express should also put pressure on Chase and other card issuers that don’t currently provide a free score.
Please let me know if you do or don’t see this new benefit in your account.
