American Express Pulls Back On Adding New Credit Card Customers Due To Uncertainty

Bloomberg is reporting that American Express has pulled back on adding new credit card customers because American Express ‘can’t get a clear picture of consumers’ financial health and employment trends’. Part of this uncertainty is caused by large companies (including American Express) made pledges to avoid large job cuts in 2020.

a few weeks ago, I called the retention line and was offered 7500 MR points for $1000 spend. I didn’t take it at the time because I had priority spend on another card and wasn’t sure I’d be able to hit $1000 in the 90 days. I called again today because I have a big purchase coming up and was told the offer no longer appears on the account. so unfortunately, the retention offers do disappear.
side note – retention offers are not subject to the spend extension timeline, only sign-up bonuses. this comes directly from three separate customer service reps who wanted to remind me of it.

Arw Amex UK the only company that has no email address?
I used to respect them but now they just exist to take fees from merchents increasingly not taking their card and existing card holders
They sent me my new card but have not bothered to pick it up
I dont like companies that think there above being communicated with

New customers to AmEx or new cards to existing customers?

I was denied for Hilton (no AF) card on 5/31, never had a Hilton card before. When I called recon on 6/1 I was told explicitly about the new 4 revolving card limit, which is fine except I only had three cards, having cancelled my Marriott biz in early April. Approved after short review by a supervisor.

Unknown if I still show 4 cards in the system nearly 60 days after closing one, or this is AmEx belt-tightening.

Can i get a retention bonus on an amex card and then upgrade the card after a few weeks? Annual fee is higher. Is that still ok or not ok?

This seems like a reasonable thing to ask over the phone. “Hey, I’m considering this higher card and want to cancel. Will you give me a retention bonus not to cancel? If I upgrade anyway will I still get the bonus? Does it matter if I complete the bonus spend first?”
