Are You Likely To Be Targeted?
When American Express launched the new cards, they also released a press release. This press release gives you a good idea of American Express’ target market for these new cards. Relevant quote as follows:
…was designed with the multi-tasker in mind, like busy moms juggling family, work and their personal lives
Credit card companies can access your credit report which contains certain personal information. While your gender is not on your credit report your current and past employment history is. As of now, we’ve only heard of working mothers receiving this offer. Here’s how they might work out if somebody is a working mother:
- Employment gaps. A lot of working months take time off after they’ve had children.
- Female specific names. Whilst your credit report doesn’t contain gender information, it does contain your full name. For gender specific names (e.g Jessica, Cynthia or Caroline) it’s easy to determine who is and isn’t female.
This might just be coincidence as there aren’t a lot of people reporting receiving these targeted offers. But it’ll be interesting to see if American Express is compiling data like this.
