Update: DEAD
[Update 6/23/19: Far as I can tell from the more recent data points, even Southwest gift card amounts of $200 (and likely higher too) ARE being reimbursed. The issue was probably just a glitch whereby for a few days the earlier in the month it wasn’t working.]
Since around 10 days ago, it appears that Southwest e-gift card purchases done to trigger the Amex airline incidental credit only works when purchasing $100 or less. Purchases $101 and above don’t seem to be triggering the credit, according to some reader reports and Flyertalk data points. Update: Now I’m unsure if the issue is the denomination, it may be something else. One reader reports getting a $200 Southwest giftcard credited only a few days ago. Yet another reader did NOT get a $50 gift card credited from May 30. Hopefully we’ll figure out what’s going on over time.
To recap the current state of gift card purchases is as follows:
- Southwest should work in denominations of $100 or less (YMMV).
- Delta works in $50 denominations, not in $100 denominations. Only desktop purchases work, don’t use the mobile site.
- American Airlines seems to be working for some but not others. The jury is still out on this one.
