Chase Automatically Upgrading Some Chase Slate Cardholders To Chase Freedom Unlimited

Chase is in the process of automatically upgrading some Chase Slate cardholders to the Chase Freedom Unlimited card. The Chase Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5x points on all purchases, so it’s actually a better card than the Chase Slate. Most people get the Chase Slate because of the 0% APR $0 BT offer on the card. The downside to this automatic upgrade is that it means you won’t be eligible for a Chase Freedom Unlimited sign up bonus in the future (while you hold this card).

Recently received a notification they were automatically upgrading one of my 2 Slate cards to a Freedom Flex. Wasn’t thrilled, as I was planning on opening a Flex card for the benefits.

I just did a product change from CSP to Slate. Was given the choice between Slate and no-fee Sapphire so obviously I chose Slate. Told the rep that I had heard Slate was leaving, but he said he had heard that too, but that wasn’t true.

I know this is an old thread but it’s almost October and I still have my Slate. Hope that helps!

DP – called in Chase rep to downgrade CF to Slate. Rep told the Slate is being discontinued and all Slate cards are being upgraded to Freedom by August.

I also received the Slate > FU upgrade notice. This PC doesn’t affect my 5/24 status does it?

So did I, does that mean credit increase or balance from slate to FU!

They upgraded me without increasing my credit limit.

It seems like it. I emailed Chase with some questions and they said that they are changing all Chase Slate cards to the Freedom.

Did they say what will happen for Slate card holders who also have both the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited?

Disappointed Chase did this without a consultation.

I would rather have the Slate again. Should I just roll the now Freedom Plus CL over to another card I have and cancel? I honestly don’t know what the advantage is of having the Freedom Plus without the initial bonus. Any thoughts on what I am missing?

Does anyone have a data point about how long before I can reapply for the Slate and if it falls under the 5/24 because I would gladly reapply. Thanks for reply.

PS I hear ya. I am going to the 5/24 rule post here on DOC. Still wondering if and when to apply…

The Slate is the oldest card I have. I already have CF. Hope they PC me to unlimited and dont close my account. I’ve had it almost 20 years I think. It used to be Providian bank cc.

They did this to increase APR. My P2 has had a Slate since the ‘08 crisis with an APR of 8.49% and with this forced conversion it now falls at 22.49%. They never carry balances but it was nice to see a single digit non promotional APR.

My dad got this email this week, right around the time he paid off the promotional balance. I told him to stick with it for everyday spend even though it’s only 1.5%. He currently uses the United Explorer for everything so I consider it a win 🙂

I wonder if it’ll be similar to how Capital One always remembers “where you started.” Meaning that even if you PC (whether manually or automatically) to a rewards-tier card from a subpar AF card, they’ll never raise your limit past a certain low amount like $3k.

I don’t really feel like this is A Thing. My first card was a student Cap1 with a ~$500 CL, which was subsequently upgraded into a Quicksilver, and then to a Visa Signature. I have a CL over $8000 on that account today.

If anything, they just seem to be more gunshy about granting large credit lines than Chase and (especially) Amex.

Also see this in a secure message from Chase
“Effective June 9, 2019, the Slate Credit Dashboard currently available with your Chase Slate credit card will be discontinued. However, if you have not already, you can enroll in Chase Credit Journey to get unlimited free access to your credit score and more. Your Slate account will remain open and can still be accessed and managed at chase.com or the Chase Mobile® app. Only the Slate Credit Dashboard will be discontinued.”
So the slate credit dashboard is also being removed

Yeah, there was a separate post announcing that a few weeks ago. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/chase-slate-to-lose-access-to-free-fico-score/
