Chase Doing Two Hard Pulls For Some Credit Card Applications, Only Removing Duplicates On Request

Recently some consumers that have applied for Chase credit cards have noticed two hard pulls (on the same credit bureau) on their credit report. Occasionally Chase and other credit issuers will pull two different credit bureaus (in fact Capital One always pulls all three nationwide credit bureaus) but as this is on the same credit bureau it appears to be an error. Thankfully Miles to Memories (via Doug at Travel Rewards Warriors) is reporting that some people that are affected by this double pull have been able to get the second pull removed from their report by requesting this from Chase.

It’s important to remember that hard pulls do affect your credit score. Technically these hard pulls are only supposed to be done by financial institutions to aid in lending decision. I suspect at some stage Chase will be fix this issue for everybody affected but in the mean time if you’ve applied for a card from Chase recently it might be worth checking your report to see if this issue is affecting you.

I recently did a mortgage refinance with Chase. Chase did 2 pulls from each of the 3 bureaus on the same day. The loan officer told me the multiple pulls for the mortgage application within 30 days will be combined to 1. But on my credit reports, it clearly shows there are 2 new pulls recorded. Is it normal? If not, who should I call to remove the extra one? Anyone has the same experience?

Does this still show on your EX report? I got a letter stating Chase would remove the duplicate but it’s still showing almost 3 weeks later.

Some DPs for y’all.

CF on 3/31/20, only 1 HP from Experian.
CSP on 8/3/20, 2 HP from Experian.
P2 just got CFU on 8/13/20 using my referral and it was 1 HP from Experian.

So I just called Chase to get the 2nd HP removed from Experian for the CSP. Very easy, didn’t get any pushback, and the rep said that he submitted the request, it’ll take 7-10 business days to get a response/decision in the mail, and then up to 90 days for Experian to update on their end. I’ll try and update when I find out what happens.

I don’t need Chase, I have something better, but thanks for heads up. I won’t be using them now.

In response to Jeff, a mortgage professional, who says: “Who cares? Unless you plan on applying for yet more credit next month, your score recovers anyway. And what was the “damage”? A few points?”, may I ask, would you have the same response if your application was denied, and now you have two pulls?

As a mortgage professional I say Who cares? Unless you plan on applying for yet more credit next month, your score recovers anyway. And what was the “damage”? A few points? The fact you opened a new card lowered your score more than the inquiry itself. And lenders look at all 3 and only use the middle one so if one went down, the lowest is disregarded anyway. Way too much paranoia about credit scores.

Wow. That’s some crazy logic, and this is where you are completely wrong.

If your customer’s credit scores were 730, 720, and 710, and the double HP caused the 720 score to drop to 709, your middle score would be 710, not 720. Can you get a top rate at 710 vs 720? Still not a cause for concern?

Not from the same credit bureau. But Chase have always done two hard pull on me. It’s combination of two from EQ, EX, and TU.

Chase always does 2 HPs on our applications from 2 agencies since at least 5 years ago. We never ask them to remove the duplicates. The last apps we had were in mid 2019. At that time those extra HPs did not seem to affect anything.

I recently got approved for the Bonvoy Boundless and sure enough, i see a double pull on the experian report. I’ve sent them a secured message but I might still call them up to request “fixing” this.

As a followup, I sent a secured message and got a response that they have submitted a request to convert one of the hard pull into a soft pull. However it has not reflected on my experian report (still shows 2 HP) and Chase says they don’t know how long it will take experian to change it. When i tried to dispute it with experian on their website, it says, hard inquiries can’t be disputed online and there is no way to do it by phone. So the options are, wait for 90 days and hopefully it will get fixed or send them a mail (ugghhh…)

Yikes, my last 3 apps had double pulls on TU and one on experian. Fingers crossed they can get rid of some of this. I didn’t even realize it! These were for May and June apps.

I requested to remove the extra pulls from Chase, they said they cannot do anything about it and gave me contact info for the credit boards.
