Chase Using Dynamic Bonus End Dates To Create Urgency

A couple of days ago we reported that the Chase Ink Cash card was showing an end date of 09/20/18 on some e-mail offers. Reddit user joghi rightfully posts that this end date is actually dynamic and changes based on when you view the application page when logged in. For example they went on the application page on 8/21 and received an e-mail on 8/22 advertising that the offer would end on 9/21 (one month from when they clicked the application page). They did something similar on 8/18 and received an end date of 9/19.

This is a classic marketing trick, by adding an end date you add a sense of urgency to apply as you don’t want to miss out on the special offer. We see this a lot on bank account bonuses as well. Sometimes a bank will have a bonus expiring at the end of the month, except that bonus has been extended for the last two or three years (each month). I guess at the end of the day Chase got us to post about an offer we normally wouldn’t have, so well played. We will make sure to be more careful in the future when reporting these end dates.
