Costco Membership Deals: Get $40 Giftcard & More

The Offer

  • Costco is running a promo to get $40 Costco Shop Card when you sign up for the $60 basic Goldstar membership tier.
  • They are also offering two deals when you sign up for the upgraded $120 Executive membership tier: $40 Shop Card and $60 discount coupon on $200 order at Costco.com.
  • Use promo code CJGPNMBR at checkout on Costco and you’ll see $.01 get deducted which confirms the promo is successfully applied (This particular promo code is from Groupon; there are others out there as well for the same deal.)

The Groupon page indicates that this offer is slated to be around through 1/2/25.

Our Verdict

You need to pay for membership with a Visa card and thus opt-in for auto-renewal in order to get these deals. You can always change that afterward, just be sure to mark yourself a reminder. Also, this deal only works for someone who has not been a Costco member for 18 months.

I’m thinking of finally becoming a Costco member for the first time in my life. I’m unsure whether to do the Executive membership or the basic Goldstar membership. For someone who like shopping online at Costco.com, the executive deal seems like a no-brainer since you’ll get back the $60 from the online coupon discount on a $200 shopping.

Check Ampre offers on some credit unions some offer 20 back on new membership (it won’t work on gold since it’s on a purchase of 60 or more) but should work on executive; also want to note I got a 100 off 200 offer instead of the 60 offer

I’ve been a member for many years with hubby on the 2nd card, can he now join as the “primary” member and get the $40 promo? Technically, he’s never had a membership in his own name, although our “address” is on the current membership.

DP: bought online (only store is 2 hrs away). Tried to verify online but it didn’t like my answers for whatever reason. Called in and the lady asked me some questions and got me verified. Pretty easy

IF I GO FOR THE 120 OPTION DO I GET BOTH $40 Shop Card and $60 discount coupon, OR IS THIS A ONE OR OTHER DEAL? CAUSE IF I GET BOTH THEN THE MORE EXPENSIVE MEMBERSHIP IS ONLY $20

I just signed up but didnt receive anything – do we have to go in-store to pick up membership card + the $40 shop card + $60 coupon?

“I’m unsure whether to do the Executive membership or the basic Goldstar membership.”

You need $3,000 spend per year (includes online) to break even on the $120 annual fee vs $60 Gold (re: 2% Executive cash back). If you exceed that, keep the Executive. Otherwise, downgrade to Gold next year.

Doesn’t matter. They refund you the difference if you can’t get back $60 with the executive

The right answer is to sign up for executive, take the superior SUB, then later switch to regular membership (unless you buy a lot) because they will credit you the difference.

I have never had a Costco membership.
I read the instructions here as well as the instructions on the Costco Reddit discussion (which gave the same code, described the same offer).
I did everything correctly.
They made me make an account before I could buy a membership.
I put in my name, address, Visa card number, allowed for annual renewal, got the .01 cent off for the promo code, etc., bought the membership, got a welcome/confirmation message on the Costco site, got a confirmation email.
Less than a minute later, I got a rejection email message telling me that my purchase had been cancelled. The email said to make sure that my credit card number was right (but it was right – I copy and paste it from an excel sheet and I’ve done that hundreds of times with this number – plus, I confirmed it by looking again at the physical card).
I cleared my cookies and tried to log in to the Costco account that I had just created (which you apparently don’t need a membership to have, so it should have let me log in with no problems) and after I entered my (previously successful) account details, it wouldn’t let me log in, it’s just a gray screen and it won’t let me click anything.
I cleared my cookies and tried again to follow the steps to purchase a membership, but it won’t let me — gray screen.
Because it’s after their opening hours, I can’t call to see what has happened.
I actually needed this membership tonight to buy something tonight online from them, and I was just about to sign up for their membership at the full price when I happened to see this DoC post and thought, “What good timing, I’ll use this coupon code to buy my first Costco membership.” But now I’m locked out of their site and can’t even buy what I needed to buy tonight.
I don’t know if this is a problem with the coupon code, or what.
It can’t be a problem with my card because I know it works and I use it all the time.
If I find out what the issue is from calling them tomorrow, I’ll come back and update.

I was on the phone with them for about 40 minutes today.
First of all, their phone tree is a disaster, not well-organized and circular. I had to finally select “cancel an online order” to be able to speak to an actual person.
When I explained why I was calling that guy said that he’d have to transfer me to the membership department.
The membership agent couldn’t figure out what had happened. She had to get a manager involved.
Then, they had me give them my Visa card information so I could pay for a membership during the phone call.
I asked about applying the promo code to the membership sign-up, and they asked me for the code. They said that it was still a valid promo code, so they would email the marketing department and request that they send me the $40 Shop Card manually in 2 weeks.
Unfortunately, when I was on the phone with them, they were having some system troubles and mistakenly put through the $60 charge twice on my credit card.
Then, I immediately received 4 payment confirmation emails from Costco in my email inbox.
I told them about the 4 confirmation emails, and they said they had never heard of their system sending out duplicate confirmation emails for the same transaction, so they will need to see if I was charged 2 times or 4 times today.
They said that they’ll have to wait until their system processes the transactions tonight, and then see tomorrow how many $60 charges have actually posted. At that point, they will refund my card for the overcharges.
This is not an auspicious start to my Costco membership.
I expect that most people won’t have these issues in signing up for a new Costco membership with this promo code, but I’m just leaving this description of how the process worked for me, in case it might help someone else who runs into the same issues.
