  • 2% in Orbucks on all other purchases

Sign Up Bonus

Current Sign Up Bonus
  • $50 Orbucks when you spend $200 or more within 90 days of account opening
Sign Up Bonus History
  • This card has always had the same sign up bonus

Redeeming Your Rewards

Orbucks can be redeemed for hotel expenses at a rate of $1 USD = $1 Orbuck when using Orbitz.com. Only specific hotels are eligible, they must have the O symbol next to them otherwise you will not be able to apply your Orbucks to the booking.

You can also only use Orbucks on bookings after the travel date they were earned, for example if you earn 5 Orbucks on the 10th of December you cannot use those Orbucks for bookings before the 10th of December.

Our Verdict

This card has too many restrictions to be worthwhiled. Orbucks can only be used for specific hotels and only when using Orbitz.com, they are other cards on the market that offer 2% cash back on all purchases. There are also cards which will earn at a higher rate if you always book at the same hotel chain.

At first glance this card looked like a winner but the restrictions make it a no go. It’s never a good idea to be locked into using a certain travel portal. They do offer a price match guarantee, but these are often a hassle to deal with and if they can be avoided they should be.

I’ve been using the Orbitz credit card now for a few years. I’ve been enjoying it. When I signed up it came with a $100 bonus for $500 spend if i recall correctly. I actually don’t even see mention of the $50 bonus on their current signup page.

I use orbitz to book 100% of my hotels and maybe 50% of my flights (I find that for AA, United, Delta and international airlines associted with these three travel systems that the price is the same as in Google flights and the 7% bonus is a really nice value added. However, for Spirit, Southwest or local airlines within countries, Orbitz generally charges more than the 7% bonus and it doesn’t make sense to use Orbitz only for said 7% cash back). With platinum, the only way to get the $50 Orbitz cash back is from bookings made through Orbitz. So if i want to get a bag check fee bag, i need to book the flight through Orbitz.

The automatic gold is very helpful. For 2017 through 2019 I was able to hit the platinum level. That got me the free TSA credit, as well as the annual $50 cash back refund on travel expenses as Orbitz cash. So for four years I got $200 back ($50×4 since 2019 rolled into 2020). In 2020 there was no way I was getting platinum, but they did extend the statuses until March 2021. It’ll be nice to be gold without doing any work this year. Gold gets you the VIP benefit at hotels which are noted as having it. It’s not a huge benefit but it’s something. I’ve previously received: two free bottles of water, two free drink tickets to the hotel bar, free room upgrade, free massage credit, free breakfast credit.

I’ve had no problems using the credit card overseas.

PLEASE READ! INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW. I was previously an Orbitz Visa Credit Card patron. As I use Orbitz for 90% of my travel, I have exhibited long-term loyalty and patronage. I can sometimes fine better services and accommodations on Kayak for flights or Hotwire or Hotels.com but with much infrequency.

As you probably know, Orbitz is a travel website. It provides airline flights, hotels, car rental, etc. Therefore, it would seem logical that users of the credit card travel regularly or are least occasionally. Further, Orbitz knows where I am traveling because, as stated previously, I book 90% of my travel-related activities on Orbitz. And while I realize Orbitz and Comenity Bank are difference organizations, one would assume travel booked through Orbitz would be available to Comenity for risk scoring.

While traveling to Europe, Comenity blocked my card when attempting to buy a train ticket, so I used my back up United Mileage Plus card. I tried at the Orbitz card at several other travel-related retail locations the following week and was blocked each time. I went online to check the status but had no alerts that my card had been disabled. I learned they left a voice message for me on my US phone which I didn’t receive because my phone does not work here. They did not send an email, or a message to my account inbox. When I called customer service, I provided my name, address, card number, last four of my SSN, phone number and birth date. They said they couldn’t help me unless I could provide the exact name of where I had attempted to use my card last. I said I tried to use it at several locations in Germany but didn’t recall where I had attempted last.

They refused to help me. If this had been my only card, I would have been stranded without access to funds. While the rewards were good, DO NOT GET THE ORBITZ CREDIT CARD or you may have the same dreadful experience as I DID.
