Does The Chase 5/24 Rule Apply To The Chase Marriott Business Card? (No) [Working Link]

Update 2/8/19: Some readers are wanting to apply for this card now before it disappears. It’s no longer showing directly on the Chase site and some application links are no longer working. You can use this application link instead.

The Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Card will no longer be available for new applications starting February 12th, 2019. Because of that I recently wrote up a post talking about whether it makes sense to sign up for that card before that date as it would be your last chance to get the bonus on that (and the AmEx SPG personal card).

I said it wasn’t worth applying for this card as the 5/24 rule did apply to it and because of that most people wouldn’t be eligible. Reader DS asked if people were sure that the 5/24 rule applied because they hadn’t seen any hard data points confirming that. It looks like I (and other readers in the comments) owe DS an apology because they were able to successfully get approved for that card. Reader Geoff also got approved despite being over 5/24 as well.

Obviously this is only two data points, so it’s still possible the 5/24 rule does apply to this card (Update: More datapoints have come in, seems it’s now clear that 5/24 does not apply). For the moment let’s assume it doesn’t, should you apply for this card? The sign up bonus is 75,000 points after $3,000 in spend and the annual fee of $99 is not waived. I don’t think this card is particularly strong and by signing up you won’t be eligible for the SPG Luxury or SPG business card for 24 months.

If you’ve already gotten those cards, can easily meet the minimum spend requirement and value Marriott points then I do think signing up does make sense. If you haven’t got the SPG luxury or SPG business cards before then I’m not sure signing up for this card and locking yourself out of getting those cards for the next 24 months makes a lot of sense, I suspect we will see strong offers on those cards within this time frame but I can also understand the counter argument of just going for this card and bonus because it’s the last chance. I’ll leave that decision to you.

Also worth remembering that you’re not eligible for the Marriott business bonus if:

  • Currently have or have had any of the following cards in the last 30 days: SPG personal card
  • Have acquired any of the following American Express cards in the last 90 days:
    • SPG Luxury
    • SPG Business
  • Have received a welcome or upgrade offer on any of the following American express cards in the last 24 months
    • SPG Luxury
    • SPG Business

Obviously if you do apply, please share if you were approved or denied in the comments and your 5/24 status. I think this is a fringe case and other cards are all under 5/24 (as previous datapoints suggest) it’s possible Chase left this card unaffected as they wanted to increase the number of business cardholders they have before they can no longer issue this card.
