Does The Chase 5/24 Rule Apply To The Chase Marriott Business Card? (No) [Working Link]

Update 2/8/19: Some readers are wanting to apply for this card now before it disappears. It’s no longer showing directly on the Chase site and some application links are no longer working. You can use this application link instead.

The Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Card will no longer be available for new applications starting February 12th, 2019. Because of that I recently wrote up a post talking about whether it makes sense to sign up for that card before that date as it would be your last chance to get the bonus on that (and the AmEx SPG personal card).

I said it wasn’t worth applying for this card as the 5/24 rule did apply to it and because of that most people wouldn’t be eligible. Reader DS asked if people were sure that the 5/24 rule applied because they hadn’t seen any hard data points confirming that. It looks like I (and other readers in the comments) owe DS an apology because they were able to successfully get approved for that card. Reader Geoff also got approved despite being over 5/24 as well.

Obviously this is only two data points, so it’s still possible the 5/24 rule does apply to this card (Update: More datapoints have come in, seems it’s now clear that 5/24 does not apply). For the moment let’s assume it doesn’t, should you apply for this card? The sign up bonus is 75,000 points after $3,000 in spend and the annual fee of $99 is not waived. I don’t think this card is particularly strong and by signing up you won’t be eligible for the SPG Luxury or SPG business card for 24 months.

If you’ve already gotten those cards, can easily meet the minimum spend requirement and value Marriott points then I do think signing up does make sense. If you haven’t got the SPG luxury or SPG business cards before then I’m not sure signing up for this card and locking yourself out of getting those cards for the next 24 months makes a lot of sense, I suspect we will see strong offers on those cards within this time frame but I can also understand the counter argument of just going for this card and bonus because it’s the last chance. I’ll leave that decision to you.

Also worth remembering that you’re not eligible for the Marriott business bonus if:

  • Currently have or have had any of the following cards in the last 30 days: SPG personal card
  • Have acquired any of the following American Express cards in the last 90 days:
    • SPG Luxury
    • SPG Business
  • Have received a welcome or upgrade offer on any of the following American express cards in the last 24 months
    • SPG Luxury
    • SPG Business

Obviously if you do apply, please share if you were approved or denied in the comments and your 5/24 status. I think this is a fringe case and other cards are all under 5/24 (as previous datapoints suggest) it’s possible Chase left this card unaffected as they wanted to increase the number of business cardholders they have before they can no longer issue this card.

My apology to DS

Mjs

I owe DS an apology as well.

Even if something seems logical or there’s a clear pattern in general, this proves that in the churning business no door should ever be considered close since there can always be a loophole.

Given that Chase was even 5/24ing the personal Marriott, all their other business cards, and some garbage cards (like Disney), my hats off to DS for being the “10th Man” in this.

@DS I said I wanted to be proven wrong and you did that. Sorry for dismissing ya.

im just gonna go against the grain here as usual and tell people to put their apologies on probation. cuz i dont like this total 180 just because of a few DPs. sure, maybe some people can initially apologize to DS for “being mean”, but dont get fucking stupid about this situation.

we need to see everyone getting approved for chase business before we can actually say “NO, 5/24 doesnt apply”. matter of fact, i hate this damn post title. we dont know shit yet, but we are already calling it. give me a break.

its no different than people getting approved for AMEX CC when they already have 5. greg at FM got 2 more after 5. but his wife got denied at 5. nobody is saying amex 5 cc max is fake news.

so at this point its YMMV and requires instant approval. we need to state it as such. period.

Has anyone tried signing up for a Chase Marriott and Amex SPG at the same time and receive the bonus? I can recall about 6 months ago when Chase was sending out 50k point upgrade offers to upgrade to Chase Marriott Premier Plus but there were stipulations that if you took the upgrade offer you wouldn’t receive a signup bonus on the AMEX SPG when they were offering 100k signup bonuses or vice versa. I signed up for AMEX SPG around September / October that came with 100k points and upgraded my Chase Marriott for 50k points before the December 31st cut off. I received both bonuses. I also never combined my Marriott and SPG accounts.

William Charles my reading of the fine print on this card is that you are ineligible for the card if you already have the SPG Luxury AMEX. Here’s the relevant portion of Chase’s fine print:

“The bonus is not available to you if you: are a current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 days, of The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express, The Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express or the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Luxury Card, and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months;”

PointsYak

Ineligible for the bonus. You can get the card if you have the SPG Lux.

Firstly, I thought chase doesn’t approve you unless you are eligible for the bonus. Secondly, even if that isn’t the case, why get the card if you’re not eligible for the bonus? Is the card planning to be switched to something else?

PointsYak

Marriott Biz and SW Biz, off the top of my head, are Chase cards you can be approved for even if you’re not eligible for the signup bonus. There are probably others. Read the anti-churning language in the fine print. It either says “This bonus is…” like it does for this card or “This product is..” like it does for Sapphires and Freedoms. I have no comment on the merits of this, I’m just correcting the comment that I originally replied to.

Same message, i received. I had SPG, SPG bz in past. So, It said, not eiligible for bonus. I cancelled and withdrawl application and chase didn’t trigger pull.

Does applying for this run the risk of getting other chase cards shut down? lol/24, a full stable of chase cards, like 10 new accounts in 6 months, moderate utilization, etc?

I applied and was approved 05/2018. At the time I was way past 5/24. Instant approval.

Just applied, and it is pending, can I apply the song Lux card now?

I applied for the United Airlines Business Card/Chase 2 days ago and was rejected, called reconsideration line and was told I was rejected because I had 11/24.

Zalmy

This is old news. It wasn’t smart to apply, if you’re actually 11/24. Unless those are AUs?

Just for a short while. Get it while you can.

anyone with a recent SPG card brave enough to try to get this card with he bonus 🙂 ?

Don’t encourage people to try when Chase’s terms are crystal clear that they’d be ineligible for the bonus.

Instantly approved. Real business, have had chase business cards before but 4 or 5 years ago at most recent. Around 10 new accounts in 24 months, so way over.

Edit to add: First new chase account in a long time. Been hitting a bunch of smaller banks mostly, most recent cards were from 5/3, Penfed, BMO harris for example.

Another DP: Applied yesterday for business card, 13/24, instantly approved.

I got the Marriott Business using my SSN in 2017 and canceled last year. It’s been under 24 months since I got the bonus, but I wouldn’t be able to get the card/bonus again if I applied with an EIN right?

Dan
Dan

hmmm ein def works to get additional inks, so this could be worth giving it a try. in my experience, i applied for the hyatt too early before the 24 months from last bonus issue, and chase wouldnt even approve the card because i was within that 24 month restriction. so if you apply with ein and get approved, you should be good

Leslie
Leslie

How does the 24 month restriction work exactly? Is it 24 months from when account was opened or 24 months from when bonus was credited (which could be anywhere during the 3 months time of getting bonus after account is opened/approved)?

Dan
Dan

its 24 months from the date the bonus was received. this was the source of my confusion as well. and its a little unclear how they count the months, so to be safe, people usually give it a little bit longer

Just tried this for EIN and SSN with sole prop. Got the pop-up so I withdrew the application

Zalmy

Pop up? This is from Chase

No, not eligible with EIN either

I don’t care about the Mariott card but now I am wondering if this is the case for the IHG and Hyatt card as well?????

mjs
mjs

Hyatt doesn’t have a business card, and the personal has tons of data that it now falls under 5/24.

Same for the IHG personal, although I don’t think I’ve seen anything definitive on the IHG business card

tassojunior
tassojunior

are people sure about IHG? I just got 2 different personals and a biz and I’m a zillion/24.
