(Update 12/27/20: Amazon gift cards are back at Giant Eagle stores now. Still not available online. Hat tip to orthros. Readers note, however, that Amazon only earns half the fuel points that other gift cards earn.)
Reader Jeremy sent in an email from Giant Eagle indicating that after March 14th they’ll no longer carry Amazon gift cards. Amazon stopped selling their gift cards through other websites back in March 2018, but they still sell them at many retail stores across the country. Full list of stores here.
Not sure if Giant Eagle will continue to carry Amazon gift cards in-store after March 14, 2019 or if they are stopping to carry them entirely. It makes sense for Amazon to pull them from the Giant Eagle website, like all others, but would be surprising for them to stop carrying it in stores, unless there are some changes in the pipeline for Amazon gift cards in stores on a broader scale (which seems unlikely to me).
People like buying Amazon gift cards at Giant Eagle to rack up fuel points.
At the Giant Eagle Marketplace they had an Amazon gift card display on 2/2. Not sure if it remained there after Christmas or if it came back. It is still only providing you 50 pts for $50.
Just an FYI – a user on reddit is saying that GE will go to cash only beginning March 1. Has anyone else heard this? I can ask at a few different GE’s this week.
Regarding gift cards, I haven’t heard or seen anything like that yet.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. When I posted that, I was talking about buying money orders. That has been confirmed now as we all know. It will be all cash for MO’s beginning March 1.
They had a huge display of cards around Christmas but since they have disappeared at the Giant Eagle Express in my town. I will have to check a few stores to be sure but I think they pulled them from the shelves yet again.
I bought one at one of my Giant Eagles just two days ago. I haven’t really been looking at any of the other GE’s but I can look in the next day or two.
The most interesting aspect of Giant Eagle now selling Amazon GC’s is that the fuel perks are half of what they give for all other purchases. Normally, it is 50 points for $50. However, they only give 25 points for a $50 purchase of Amazon GC’s.
@Tomj…at which Giant Eagle are you buying Amazon Gift Cards? They are not available locally nor on-line…please explain…
John – they are showing up in the weekly ad for Columbus – https://www.gianteagle.com/weekly-ad. I haven’t been in the store yet to confirm.
The max return on gas is 3% – if you get the full 30 gallons since you only earn half the perks. At least this can be stacked with either grocery store (Giant Eagle) or gas station (Get Go) credit card spend bonus.
Thank you Scott…we are “backwoods” country here…I’ll look for Amazon Gift Cards as I visit my local Tuscarawas County Giant Eagle Stores (both of them).
Scott…they also showed up on my weekly ad…thank you for pointing that out…appreciate it…
I saw them at the Giant Eagle in Gibsonia, PA just north of Pittsburgh and also in the Sarver Giant Eagle. Both stores have signs and displays so they are making a big deal our of the return of Amazon. If you can’t find them, I would be patient and check back. This could be a roll out.
BTW, I posted this info on the Reddit’s MS weekly 10 days ago (Week of December 12).
I have purchased several after Christmas and today, but got no fuel perks at all. I am contacting customer service.
I have had VERY good results contacting customer service. They respond quickly and do whatever to make it right.
Then why does other food stores still sell Amazon gift cards?
I called Amazon and got no response.
I really think Giant Eagle needs to reevaluate some of their policies. The decision to remove Amazon gift cards is one of those policies. Is it because of the competition of Whole Foods? I live no wear near a Whole Foods. Honestly if Giant Eagle want to improve their competition with an opposing company, I suggest that they improve the products the offer in their prepared foods and bakeries. The quality of those items at GE is only average compared to their competition. I refuse to buy prepared foods a bakery products at GE due to the low quality.
So…maybe go to GE & buy a gift card to a store that sells amazon cards, such as CVS,Best Buy, Walgreens, rite aid, Lowe’s and just buy a amazon card! Will a store (or these stores) let you buy a gift card with a gift card?? I’ll try it & see what happens.
Most stores do NOT allow you to use gift cards to purchase gift cards in their stores (most say it in the fine print on the actual GC).
Why did Giant Eagle stop selling Amazon gift cards?
Probably because Amazon now owns Whole Foods, which is a direct competitor to Giant Eagle. They stopped selling Walmart cards when Walmart started selling groceries, too.
The competition aspect doesn’t really make any sense when you think that Meijer and Kroger both sell Amazon gift cards still and they both have Whole Foods as competition. Meijer especially since they sell a lot more than food.
This really makes me angry!😖I heard that Amazon stopped the selling of their cards in the Giant Eagle!
Shame on you, Amazon.
But, hey people, think a minute. No, cars do not have 30-gallon gas tanks. BUT, what you do is buy 5-gallon gas cans & fill up your vehicle first, and then the rest of the 30-gallons goes into the gas cans!!! They will not allow you to fill up two cars (they claim it’s unsafe–whatever). But, if you’re gonna play the game, learn the rules!!! I just got 30 gallons of FREE gas from Get Go last month (& I have 3 gas cans filled and a few gallons in a 4th!). Always take your gas cans out of your vehicle & put them on the concrete to fill them (this is for safety). Since it’s free gas, ya gotta play by their rules!
As for the Amazon gift cards, I wish I would’ve known before today!!! I’ve been buying Amazon gift cards at Giant Eagle for nearly ten years…guess I’ll be getting them elsewhere now. GE didn’t have a popular home improvement store’s gift cards for a while, but now they’re back, so who knows???
When gas was $4 a gallon back in 2011, a couple had their house burn down because they were hoarding hundreds of gallons of gas in their garage. If you’re gonna do that, use the gas as soon as possible and don’t store it.
