Global Entry To Increase Fee To $120 (Chase & Citi To Increase Fee Reimbursement)

Update 4/22/24: Chase will also be increasing the Global Entry fee reimbursement to $120.

Update: Citi is the first card issuer to announce they will be increasing the Global Entry fee reimbursement to $120 on the Citi Prestige & Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard.

Original post: Global Entry is increasing the membership fee from $100 to $120 on October 1, 2024. In addition NEXUS (which provides Global Entry, TSA PreCheck and expedited entry into Canada) will increase the fee from $50 to $120. Minors (under the age of 18) who apply at the same time as a parent or legal guardian will be exempt from the fee (currently they pay full price for Global Entry, NEXUS was already free). According to the government the fee is changing as $100 is no longer sufficient to cover the costs associated with the application. It’s unclear if credit card issuers that currently provide a Global Entry credit will increase this from $100 to $120, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t as this fee is generally a low cost to administer.

I wonder if all the credit cards that reimburse for Global Entry will now inadvertently also reimburse for NEXUS, since they should both show up on the credit card statement as “Trusted Traveler Program” and $120. Currently, only CSR and Aeroplan cards recognize the $50 charge for NEXUS.

Wonder how the free minor stuff is going to work. I currently have my 3 minors signed up previously, but it says “Minors who apply AT THE SAME TIME AS PARENTS”. My kids all have different expiration dates from us the parents. Hmm….

Because expiration is on your birthday, I doubt this “at the same time” means all persons to have to have the same expiration…

I guess my point is – my personal renewal isn’t possible to 2025. My wife till 2026. My kids currently can’t renew until 2027 and 2028. So how exactly will that work, since they can’t renew when mom/dad renew?

They literally aren’t eligible to renew at the time of mom/dad, so I can’t think of another way to interpret “at the same time as a parent”

The name Global Entry is misleading. The program does not allow faster entry everywhere globally. It only allows faster entry back into the USA. Perhaps it should be called USA Entry or America Entry.

It does allow easy access to Mexico and Canada. But point taken, otherwise starfish are neither fish nor stars, and people labeled “fatphobic” and “transphobic” are not actually afraid of fats or trans people.

It’s even more misleading than that. It’s extortion re-framed as a service.

Have they already charged you or you will get charged later (post fee increase)?

So what? If you filed for renewal before your membership expired, you get to use global entry for two more years.

If you did not file before your membership expired, you’re SOL (and it is on you).

Husbad renewal application was submitted in March 2023 and was not approved until February 2024. Daughter renewal application was submitted a month before. Then it went to conditional approval in a week, then suddenly approved month later.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they change the name from Global Entry to something else. And then card issuers can’t recognize and won’t reimburse automatically all together!!

The government doesn’t care that you’re not paying for this. When I enrolled and the agent was reading from his script, he literally told me “many credit cards will reimburse this fee.” A bit too late seeing how I was already sitting there but I promise you they’re aware of how many people are getting it for free.

I’m pretty sure there’s an official website that lists all cards that fully or partially reimburse the fee too

does anybody know whether any of the banks (chase, b of a, wells fargo, etc) code global entry fees as a “travel” merchant category? i don’t have one that offers the global entry credit and am not planning on getting one before i’m up for renewal this summer, but i have several cards that offer % cash back or points for “travel” category–should i use one of these to pay to try to get 3%+ cash back, or stick with a card that offers a flat 2%+ cash back on all purchases?

Dude it’s a one time $120 expense. The 1% you gain over a 2% card card is $1.20. Hardly worth the time you spent typing out your question.

But then you find a 10% off Amazon offer by using one point and you buy a $4,000 TV on Amazon five times and save $2000 at a rate of 40,000 CPP

None of the above. The only correct card to pay for global entry with is a card that reimburses it – yours or someone else’s free plat AU card.

No, I think money is extremely political. With money I can influence things more, isolate myself from the parts of society I don’t want to associate with, get away with crime much more easily. We live in a class based society and money is one of the largest signifiers of where you rank.

Because a price hike for a government service obviously involves politics. Like that’s not hard to see the relevance. The real comment here is “I don’t want to hear political discussions” and that’s fine you don’t want to, pretending like one couldn’t or shouldn’t discuss politics is basically demanding we comport our discussions around your preferences.

everyone increasing prices needs to explain why and not just make us live with it.

Are agents getting pay hikes? are we reducing the processing itmes or line time? where is this $ going.

The $100 price has been the same since the program was founded 16 years ago. If they were smart they would have raised the price 1%/year ($1) to keep up with expenses/inflation. Instead they let the fee revenue fall behind costs. In theory means other parts of CBP’s budget (like securing the border) are being diverted to subsidize Global Entry losses instead.

During the previous administration nobody seemed to care about the budget deficits. But now we gotta get programs to break even
