How Much Are BBVA Compass Points Worth? (DoubleTriple Points & CompassPoints)

BBVA Compass offers a number of credit cards that are of interest to us and they offer two different points systems: DoubleTriple points (earned on the NBA credit card) and CompassPoints (earned on all other cards). I got in touch with Melissa Jankowski, Executive Director of Issuing, BBVA Compass regarding the value of these points and this is what I found out.

How Much Are DoubleTriple Points Worth?

As mentioned previously DoubleTriple Reward points are earned exclusively on the BBVA Compass NBA American Express Card. The points can be redeemed for the following:

  • Cash back
  • Statement credits
  • Merchandise
  • Tickets
  • Gift cards
  • VIP experiences

If you want to redeem for statement credit, the conversion is simple. One point is worth one penny and you can redeem a minimum of 2,500 points ($25) at a time. If you want a VIP experience (e.g a one on one with Kevin Durant or James Harden) then that will set you back 1,300,000 points (statement credit value of $13,000).

At the moment BBVA do not make the reward catalog available until you’re a cardholder, but this will change in the near future with it becoming public.

  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 5x points during the NBA All-Star Weekend and two weeks of the NBA finals
    • 3x points on qualifying NBA tickets, NBA in-stadium transactions and NBAStore.com transactions
    • 2x points at supermarkets and gas stations
    • 1x points on all other purchases

How Much Are CompassPoints Worth?

The value of CompassPoints mirrors that of the DoubleTriple points (see above), although it’s not possible to redeem these points for unique NBA experiences, NBA apparel (or really anything to do with the NBA). Most people will find that the best option for redeeming points is statement credits with 1 point = 1 penny starting at 2,500 points = $25.

Originally we had thought that you would need to redeem 75,000 points to get 1¢ in value due to this public reward catalog that PFdigest found (great sleuthing as always). I have confirmed that that is an old reward chart and no longer accurate. It’s possible to redeem 2,500 points for $25, which makes a lot of the credit cards earning CompassPoints more interesting.

Final Thoughts

First of all thank you to Melissa Jankowski who worked hard to get this information to me so quickly. It’s also great to see that BBVA Compass are planning on making the full rewards catalog available to the general public, as that is one of my biggest pet peeves.

It’s great to see that points are worth 1¢ and you can redeem starting at 2,500 points (you can also see the minimum cash redemption for each card issuer here). Because of this I’m going to pull the trigger on the NBA card.
