How to Get an Image Next to your Comment on Doctor of Credit

Originally posted 5/11/21, repost on 3/24/24

Every few weeks someone reaches out via the comments or email to find out why some ‘special’ readers have their picture next to their DoC blog comments while others do not. To get an avatar next to your comments on this site and many others, you need to register with Gravatar.

Gravatar Link

As the Gravatar site explains: A Gravatar is a Globally Recognized Avatar. You upload it and create your profile just once, and then when you participate in any Gravatar-enabled site, your Gravatar image will automatically follow you there.

In the top-right corner on Gravatar.com, they’ll prompt you to login to your WordPress account; or create one now for free if you don’t already have one. Then upload your picture or whatever avatar you’d like to use and it’ll follow you around the internet on many, many websites.

The Gravatar is tied to the email address used with your WordPress account. Any time you use that email address on a blog which is Gravatar-enabled, the image will come up automatically; you don’t need to be signed into your WordPress or Gravatar account – it’s tied to the email. You can also add multiple email addresses to be tied to the same Gravatar. Just be sure to use a different email address if you post a comment somewhere that you don’t want your image showing.

Chuck  William Charles Gadget Hi all, stupid question here, but how do I tag a user in a post who doesn’t have a Gravatar and just has some generic name like “Mike” and there are like a dozen Mikes when I search @Mike?

Icarus,

See my comment here for how to tag people: #2007558 .

You can just select any of the “Mike’s” on the list. Then, just edit the guest number you see to match the comment number of the person you are trying to tag.

I.E. You would be @ guest_2092871 (just no space after the @ sign).

This even works if that person has not commented on the particular page you are on, and can grab their comment number from another DoC page.

And, you can copy in paste the comment number, but you need to paste as plain text.

If they have a comment history of “1”, there is a good chance they didn’t leave an email address and probably won’t get the notification.
