IHG Testing Pay With Points (Pay For Food/Drinks/Spa – 0.4¢ Per Point)

Update: Usually it’s 0.4¢ per point. $5 is 1300 points, $10 is 2500 points, $20 is 5000 points

IHG is testing pay with points, this will let IHG Rewards Club members redeem IHG points for purchases in hotel (e.g food, drink and spa treatments). It will cost 200 points to redeem for $1, and partial redemptions will not be allowed (e.g $1.5 would cost 400 points). Currently it’s only available at a few select hotels. If it was just a flat 0.5¢ per point then this would be great value, but because of the breakage of having to redeem in flat $1 increments it’s less useful for small purchases.

If you value the convenience so much that you buy food, drink and spa treatments in hotel, why would you care about the flat $1 increments rounding up

Hoping someone figures out how to cash-in IHG points for 0.5 cents more broadly …

Although you can redeem 200 points for $1, that’s an outlier, the calculation actually used is ~0.4 cpp: $5 is 1300 points, $10 is 2500 points, $20 is 5000 points, etc.

This would be more useful if it were easier to gin up IHG points at a good value. Since it’s not easy, I would save my points for free night redemptions.

I still have the 5,000 free IHG points from last year’s promotion, and just got an e-mail saying the points will expire in December. I can’t find any hotel rooms for 5,000 ad advertised, what’s the best way to use the 5,000 points before they expire in a month? The best I see is just a physical $10 Starbucks gift card?
