Our Verdict
Should work for unlimited uses. Use Freedom this quarter for 5x at the grocery or use a credit card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.
You also get double fuel points on groceries on weekends during May, so this weekend is a good time to go shopping.
How to use these points and what’s the benefit?
Our Verdict: Mentions to use Chase Freedom card for 5% cash back at grocery. While that is true but Chase Freedom is a Visa card and starting 4/3/2019 Kroger family grocery chains have stopped accepting all Visa Credit Cards.
I don’t believe that’s true; I believe it was only one small chain within the overall Kroger brand who stopped accepting Visa.
I can attest Smiths doesn’t take Visa anymore.
Yes-not all Kroger brands stopped taking Visa–still using mine all the time there
Correct, Visa still fine at Marianos.
Just used Chase Visa at Kroger at lunchtime today.
I used my Chase Visa for the last promotion just 2 weeks ago and got the 5x at Kroger.
I buy ARCO gift cards because we through 250 bucks of gas a month in our family…..this gives me the lowest (cash) price at ARCO, which is always the cheapest gas in the area. Builds up my Kroger points big time with something I was going to buy anyway. MIKEDROP!
You actually get the fuel points on those? At my Kroger affiliate the terms say there are no FPs on Kroger gcs or fuel gcs. Maybe I should try anyways!
Where does it say no Fuel Points on Fuel GCs? I haven’t received any points on my last two sets of BP (gas) gift cards, this could explain why.
The online coupon says “when you buy a participating gift card* Restrictions Apply. See Store for Details.” I’ll look when I go into my Mariano’s (Chicago area) over the weekend.
I believe it is in the fine print in printed material. I bought a Marianos gc once when I was new to this and was asking the CSR why no FPs and was pointed to something that said no FPs on Kroger or fuel GCs.
There have been tons of reports of fraud on these Kroger GCs that isn’t looking like you will get your money back for.
Yup, I read about it on another site.
Peel the tab yourself before you get to the register and make sure the barcode feels like the plastic of the card inside the package.
Unscrupulous actors have been inserting paper barcodes belonging to different cards (that the scammer has in their possession). Once you pay, you activate the scammer’s gift card.
Thanks a lot for posting this. Could you please post the link of the other site where the details can be found? One of my $100 Visa GC was fraudulently used (no paper barcode though), my mistake was I kept the GC too long (considering visa GCs are safe!)

if won’t or can’t quickly liquidate, promptly register it should help… except for the recently disclosed faked barcode, of course
Many cashiers won’t process the purchase if the tab is already pulled before you walk up. Best to do it in their presence and then to take all the time you need giving the package a good lookover.
Apparently, this is not limited to Kroger. Safeway and Walgreens are also reportedly affected.
It happened to me last week in Walgreens, the store does not care at all, i call the number on the back of the Visa card, luckily got money back within 8 hours.
That’s exceptionally quick. My experience was funds were 100% replaced via a replacement card which took about a week to receive. I then had to call and speak to a rep and provide personal info to activate.
Walgreens and Krogers VGC are totally different. You were lucky that you didn’t have to deal with Kroger VGC “customer service.”
What kind of fraud specifically are we talking about, and which open-loop gift cards? I’ve had fraud (the card you bought drained after activation) on US Bank MCGCs (prepaidgiftcard.com) at Safeway stores, but never that kind of fraud on the newer VGC or MCGC Blackhawk Network issued Metabanks at Safeway stores.
