- Would You Have Spotted This Skimmer? by Krebs On Security. This is why Chip & PIN should be standard. Hopefully this means ALDI will start using chip as default at least.
- Chase Credit Cards Can Now Fund Horseracing Bets by View From The Wing. I obviously don’t recommend using this to meet minimum spend requirements, but I’m surprised they are allowing this and not cryptocurrency purchases. I would have assumed they carried similar risks.
- Faceswapping, Unethical Videos, and Future Shock by Tom Scott. Really interesting watch.
I have watched the deep fake videos. You can tell they are fake. Something about the face… I can’t put my finger on it
Well the good news is we’ve got a lid on this now. Reddit, twitter, youtube and even some porn sites have declared that this face swapping stuff won’t be tolerated and they won’t be hosting those videos or the tools to create them. So there’s nothing to worry about…
whats new about the faking videos piece? couldnt people produce fake videos decades ago? sure, technology evolves and gets better, and more easily available to the masses, but what makes ‘blackmail videos’ any more/less likely then people making incriminating blackmail photos with photoshop? and more importantly if fake photos havent destroyed our world, why would (more) fake videos?
His point was that in the past it took considerable skill, effort and resources to fake something and now it’s looking like a simple plug-n-play app will make the ability available to anyone with minimal effort and skill.
Yeah I checked this stuff out to just understand how good the fakes were and for less than a weeks work, it’s actually too good. I mean now that it’s in the hands of the masses, people can really do whatever, it is a bit dangerous.
I think what’s new is that it’s a mostly automated process. You’re just training something to do it for you, rather than needing any level of technical skill.
