The crazy thing is, not only Chase’s system is exploitable but they also refuse to investigate properly and deny claims afterwards.
“[Chase] bank said there was no proof of any scam.” Update: “We are making changes to our ATM’s to protect our customers,” Chase Bank said. https://abc7news.com/atm-scam-tap-card-chase-bank-surveillance-video-suspect/13091584/
How does taking over an MVNO crate more competition? I would think the opposite. Why would T mobile compete with itself? It seems just to create an appearance of competition.
Why is this a “feature” of contactless? Why glue the card slot? Is this because it waits to eject the card at the end of the session? I dont’ think i’ve ever seen a logout button.
You glue the card slot because most people still don’t think to use tap.
It’s a variant on the scam where someone jams the slot of MetroCard vending machines and then offers to sell you a card or a swipe. That one’s on its last legs because of the new contactless options.
But why do people not forget to “log out” when they use the card slot? Why does this scam only work with contactless? It must be that you only get your card back when you’re officially done. But then some small fraction of people forget to take their cards.
OMNY still needs to figure out a way to be paid by credit/debit because a lot of people get commuter benefits via card. But that won’t work for the scammers.
Not trying to blame/shame the victims, but it’s a bit hard to imagine people walking away from the ATM before confirming that the session is fully ended. Maybe I’m just a paranoid person but I pay a lot of attention to this at any ATM and even post office APCs. Perhaps it helps that I have the habit of always getting a paper receipt.
But if multiple people can fall scam to this you must also wonder how poor the system design is…
Agree. Even after inserting and removing card, I always made sure for the screen to go back to a welcome to Chase. Some people are too much in a hurry these days. I don’t use ATMs often anymore but I would think anyone else in the vicinity would make me more likely to stick around and make sure my account was no longer accessible.
If you are used to the screens of a single bank, then it is easy to see if you got logged out or not
But if you use multiple bank ATMs and that too only occasionally, then it is very difficult. Also some ATMs are full of ads for the bank and make it very difficult to see if your session is still active or not.
The biggest stupidity from Chase is that the logout/timeout policy is different if you insert card vs if you use contact less option. They should have a simple banner at top in black, saying you are still logged in, logout before you leave, and the whole scam goes away.
But of course, these rascals wont do that, blame the public, make that lady go over 5 times with her fraud claim but when the media inquires their story changes, they need to burn in hell
With Chase and most other ATMs I use, I just wait until the screen says to insert card to start. I haven’t used an ATM in a long time, cash is rarely used, so maybe things have changed in the contactless era. There has to be some personal accountability though.
Crazy Chase story!
